These instructions apply to the Suzuki Jimny Mk3 (JB) 1998-2018.

A flat battery is the most common reason a Suzuki Jimny (JB) will not start. Because the Jimny is a light vehicle with a simple electrical system, it jump-starts easily from another 12V car using a set of jumper cables.
Never push- or tow-start a Jimny with a catalytic converter and manual gearbox — raw fuel can damage the catalyst. Use jumper cables instead.
How to jump-start a Suzuki Jimny
- Park the donor car nose-to-nose without the two vehicles touching. Set the parking brake on both, put a manual gearbox in neutral (an automatic in P), switch off the ignition and all electrical loads.
- Connect one end of the red cable to the positive (+) post of the donor battery, and the other end to the positive (+) post of the flat battery.
- Connect one end of the black cable to the negative (−) post of the donor battery.
- Connect the other end of the black cable to a solid, unpainted engine ground on the Jimny — such as a bracket on the engine — at least 45 cm (18 in) away from the battery. Do not clip it to the negative post of the flat battery.
- Start the donor car and let it run for a minute, then start the Jimny.
- Once the Jimny is running, remove the cables in the exact reverse order: engine ground first, then the donor negative, then both positive clamps.
- Drive the Jimny for 20–30 minutes, or charge the battery, to put charge back in.
Wear eye protection, remove rings and watches, and keep the clamps from touching each other or any metal while connected.
What if the Jimny still won’t start?
If it will not crank after a good jump, the battery may be too far gone to hold charge, or the connections are dirty — clean the terminals and try again. If it cranks but will not fire, the problem is not the battery; look at the fuel or ignition system.
Frequently asked questions
Can I push-start a Suzuki Jimny?
Only as a last resort, and never a manual model with a catalytic converter, as it can damage the emission system. Jump-starting is the safe method.
Where do I attach the negative clamp?
To a solid, unpainted metal ground on the engine — not to the negative battery post — to keep any spark away from the battery.
How long should I run the engine afterwards?
At least 20–30 minutes of driving, or put it on a charger, so the battery recovers.
