Replace a Headlight Bulb

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 8, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Jimny Mk3 (JB) 1998-2018.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Suzuki Jimny (JB) uses a single H4 (type 472) halogen bulb in each headlight, which handles both dipped and main beam. You can change one from the engine bay in a few minutes without removing the headlight or the bumper.

Handle the new bulb by its metal base only. Oil from your fingers on the glass creates a hot spot that shortens its life.

How to replace a headlight bulb on a Suzuki Jimny

  1. Switch off the lights and the ignition, and open the hood.
  2. Reach behind the headlight unit and pull off the round rubber weather cover on the back of the lamp.
  3. Unplug the wiring connector from the back of the bulb.
  4. Release the wire retaining spring: press it in, unhook it to the side, and swing it clear.
  5. Withdraw the old H4 bulb, noting which way up the locating tabs sit.
  6. Fit the new H4 bulb so its tabs seat in the slots — it only goes in one way — holding it by the metal base.
  7. Hook the retaining spring back over the bulb, refit the connector, and press the rubber cover fully back on so it seals.
  8. Test dipped and main beam, then check the aim against a wall.

Always replace bulbs in pairs so both sides match in brightness and color.

Headlight leveling dial on a Suzuki Jimny, numbered 0 to 3
The headlight-leveling dial beside the steering column — set it to 0 for a driver-only load and a higher number when the car is loaded or towing (the car covered; LHD shown).

Setting the headlight leveling dial

Jimnys fitted with manual headlight leveling have a small thumbwheel on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel. Set it to 0 for a driver-only load and turn it to a higher number when the car is loaded or towing, so your beams do not dazzle oncoming traffic. Return it to 0 afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

What headlight bulb does a Suzuki Jimny take?
An H4 (472) halogen bulb, 60/55 W, in each headlight — one bulb per side for both dipped and main beam.

Do I need to remove the bumper to change a Jimny headlight bulb?
No. The bulb is reached from behind the headlight in the engine bay. The bumper only comes off if you are replacing the whole headlight unit.

Why has my new bulb failed quickly?
Usually because the glass was touched during fitting. Wipe a new bulb with alcohol and handle it by the base only.
