These instructions apply to the Suzuki Vitara Mk4 (LY) 2015-2024.

If your Suzuki Vitara (LY) won’t start and the cause is a flat 12V battery, you can jump-start it from another car with a set of jumper cables. The Vitara’s battery sits in the engine bay, and the procedure below follows Suzuki’s own instructions.
Use only a 12V lead-acid battery as the booster. On SHVS mild-hybrid cars, jump the ordinary 12V battery as normal — never touch the separate lithium-ion pack.
How to jump-start a Suzuki Vitara
- Park the booster car close enough for the cables to reach, without the two cars touching. Set the parking brake on both and switch off the ignition.
- Connect one end of the red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the flat battery.
- Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery.
- Connect one end of the black cable to the negative (−) terminal of the booster battery.
- Connect the other end of the black cable to a bare, heavy metal part of the engine on the car with the flat battery — such as an engine mounting bracket — well away from the battery. Do not clip it to the flat battery’s negative terminal.
- Start the booster car and let it idle at a moderate speed.
- Start the Vitara.
- Remove the cables in the exact reverse order once the engine runs.
Connecting the final clamp to the engine rather than the dead battery’s negative post keeps any spark away from the hydrogen gas a charging battery gives off — a direct connection risks an explosion.
What if it still won’t start?
If the engine won’t crank after a good jump, the battery may be beyond recovery or the terminals are corroded. If it cranks but won’t fire, the battery isn’t the problem — look elsewhere. Drive for 20–30 minutes afterward to recharge.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the battery on a Suzuki Vitara?
In the engine bay. Lift the hood and it is clearly visible with its terminal covers.
Can I jump-start a Vitara SHVS mild hybrid?
Yes — jump the normal 12V battery exactly as above. Leave the lithium-ion SHVS pack alone; only a dealer services it.
Can I push-start a Vitara?
It’s not recommended, especially on automatics. Jump-starting is the safe method.
