Replace the Engine Air Filter

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 8, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Vitara Mk4 (LY) 2015-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The engine air filter on the Suzuki Vitara (LY) sits in the airbox in the engine bay and stops dust reaching the engine. A clogged filter costs you power and economy, and it’s a quick drop-in change — the element simply sits inside the airbox between the two halves of the housing.

How to replace the engine air filter on a Suzuki Vitara

  1. Switch off the engine, let it cool, and open the hood.
  2. Find the air cleaner box — the large plastic housing with the intake duct running to the engine.
  3. Release the clips around the lid (and undo any retaining screws). Lift the top of the airbox; it stays tethered by the intake hose, so you don’t need to fully remove it.
  4. Lift out the old filter element and note which way up it sits and which edge faces the intake.
  5. Wipe out any debris from the lower housing with a cloth — don’t let dirt fall into the intake.
  6. Drop the new element in the same orientation, with its sealing rim seated all the way around.
  7. Close the airbox lid and refasten every clip (and screw) so it seals; an unsealed box lets unfiltered air and dust straight into the engine.

How often should the Vitara air filter be changed?

Inspect it at each service and replace it roughly every 40,000 km (24,000 miles), or sooner if you drive on dusty or unpaved roads. Hold the element up to a light — if little light passes through, replace it.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the air filter on a Suzuki Vitara?
In the air cleaner box in the engine bay, with the intake duct leading from it to the engine.

Do I need tools to change the Vitara air filter?
Usually just a screwdriver, if the airbox lid has retaining screws as well as clips. Many change with clips alone.

Can I clean the air filter instead of replacing it?
A standard paper element is tapped out gently at a push, but once it’s dirty or oily it should be replaced, not washed.
