A dead 12 V battery stops the 2019-and-up GMC Sierra 1500 cold. GMC puts the jump points under the hood — a remote positive terminal under a cover and a remote ground, both on the passenger side — so you never clamp the battery itself.
- Donor close but not touching; both parking brakes set, automatics in P (transfer case in a drive gear), both ignitions off.
- Slide the cover off the Sierra’s remote positive (+) terminal on the passenger side.
- Red (+) to the Sierra’s remote positive, then to the donor’s positive (+).
- Black (−) to the donor’s negative (−), then to the Sierra’s remote negative ground — not the dead battery post.
- Run the donor a few minutes, then start the Sierra.
- Remove in reverse order; let the truck idle to recharge.
FAQ
Where are the Sierra’s jump points?
Both on the passenger side under the hood — the positive stud under a cover and a dedicated remote ground.
Diesel with two batteries?
Use the battery nearer the starter, at the passenger-side rear of the bay.
Why ground away from the battery?
The final connection sparks; keeping it off the battery avoids igniting vented hydrogen.
Won’t start after a jump?
Have the battery and alternator tested — a good one should hold charge once running.
The GMC Sierra 1500 is mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, so this procedure is the same on both trucks — see our Chevrolet Silverado 1500 guides.
