Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Tacoma Mk2 (N200) 2005-2015.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2005–2015 Toyota Tacoma you disconnect the 12 V battery. Taking the negative off first keeps a wrench from shorting the live post to the body. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Park, ignition off, key out. Put on eye protection.
  2. Open the hood. The battery is in the engine compartment, held by a clamp at its base.
  3. Loosen and remove the negative (−, black) cable first and tuck it clear.
  4. Then loosen and remove the positive (+, red) cable.
  5. Do your work. Reconnect positive first, then negative, and tighten both.
  6. Switch on and check for warning lights.

FAQ

Which cable comes off first?

Negative first off, negative last on — it stops a slipped tool bridging the live positive to ground.

What re-learns after reconnecting?

The clock and radio presets, and the TPMS re-initializes on the next drive. If recharging the battery on the truck, disconnect the ground (negative) cable first.

Will the truck start normally afterward?

Yes. On smart-key trucks you may need to cycle a door open and closed after reconnecting.

If your Tacoma stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
