Reset the Maintenance Light

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota 4Runner Mk5 (N280) 2010-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The MAINT REQD light on a 2010–2024 Toyota 4Runner (N280) comes on at each service interval. You clear it with the trip-meter button and the ignition — no tool, no menu. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Turn the ignition off with trip meter A showing (switch the display to Trip A first, not the odometer).
  2. Press and hold the display-change (trip) button, and while holding it turn the ignition to ON — do not start the engine, or the reset is canceled.
  3. Keep holding until the display reads 000000. The MAINT REQD light is cleared.

FAQ

Why must the engine stay off?

Starting the engine cancels reset mode — the ignition has to be in the ON position with the engine not running.

It has to show Trip A?

Yes — switch the meter to the Trip A reading before you start, not the odometer or Trip B.

When should I reset it?

Only after the scheduled service; the light is mileage-based, not an oil-condition reading.

What oil does the 4Runner take?

The 4.0L V6 takes 0W-20, about 6.6 qt with a new filter.

If your 4Runner stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
