Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota 4Runner Mk5 (N280) 2010-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2010–2024 Toyota 4Runner you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Do your work. Reconnect positive first, negative last; tighten both.
  5. On smart-key vehicles, shift to P, open and close a door, then start. The engine may not catch on the first try after a reconnect — that’s normal.

FAQ

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

Why didn’t it start on the first try?

After reconnecting, the system re-initializes — a failed first crank is normal; try again.

Recharging on the vehicle?

Disconnect the ground (negative) cable first before connecting a charger.

If your 4Runner stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
