These instructions apply to the Toyota 4Runner Mk5 (N280) 2010-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.
A flat 12 V battery will stop a 2010–2024 Toyota 4Runner cranking. Jump it in order and ground the last clamp to bare metal away from the battery. This is the US-market procedure.
- Keep the smart key on you (the alarm can trigger). Park a 12 V donor close but not touching; parking brakes on, both ignitions off; open the hood.
- Red (+) to the 4Runner’s positive (+), then to the donor’s positive (+).
- Black (−) to the donor’s negative (−), then to a solid unpainted metal point on the 4Runner — away from the battery and moving parts.
- Run the donor at a slightly raised idle for about 5 minutes. On smart-key vehicles, open and close a door with the ignition off, then start the 4Runner.
- Remove the cables in the exact reverse order, then have the battery checked.
FAQ
Where does the negative clamp go?
Bare, unpainted engine metal — not the dead battery’s negative post — to keep the spark away from battery gas.
Can I push-start it?
No — the automatic 4Runner can’t be push- or tow-started. Use cables or a jump pack.
Why did the alarm go off?
Connecting cables can trigger the alarm; keep the smart key with you and it will clear when you switch on.
If your 4Runner stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
