Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Camry Mk8 (XV70) 2018-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2018–2024 Toyota Camry you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure (gas models).

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment. On the 3.5L V6 you must lift off the engine cover first to reach it.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Do your work. Reconnect positive first, negative last and tighten both.
  5. Switch on and check for warning lights; some systems re-initialize on the next drive.

FAQ

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last — never let the disconnected negative touch the positive.

What battery does it use?

An LN2 (about 60 Ah / 563 CCA) or LN3 (about 70 Ah / 603 CCA) case, depending on trim — match the case size and equal-or-greater CCA.

Anything to re-set?

The clock and radio presets; removing the battery clears some ECU memory, so a few systems re-learn as you drive. Turn the ignition fully off before disconnecting.

If your Camry stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
