Jump-Start a Dead Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Camry Mk8 (XV70) 2018-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A flat 12 V battery will stop a 2018–2024 Toyota Camry cranking. Jump it in order and ground the last clamp to bare metal away from the battery. This is the US-market procedure (gas models).

  1. Keep the smart key on you (the alarm can trigger). Park a 12 V donor close but not touching; parking brakes on, both ignitions off.
  2. Open the hood; on the V6, remove the engine cover to reach the terminals.
  3. Red (+) to the Camry’s positive (+), then to the donor’s positive (+).
  4. Black (−) to the donor’s negative (−), then to a solid unpainted metal point on the Camry — away from the battery and moving parts.
  5. Run the donor at a slightly raised idle ~5 minutes. On smart-key cars, open and close a door, then start the Camry.
  6. Remove the cables in the exact reverse order.

FAQ

Where does the negative clamp go?

Bare, unpainted metal on the engine — not the dead battery’s negative post.

There’s no remote jump terminal?

No — the Camry uses the battery’s own under-hood terminals (lift the V6 engine cover to reach them).

Can I push-start it?

No — the automatic can’t be push- or tow-started. Use cables or a jump pack.

If your Camry stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
