Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Tahoe (GMT900) 2007-2014.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2007–2014 Chevrolet Tahoe you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure, the same as on the Suburban.

  1. Ignition off, key out, doors closed a couple of minutes so the modules sleep. Eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the 12 V battery is under the hood in the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Do your work. Reconnect positive first, negative last and tighten both.
  5. Switch on, check for lights, and re-set the clock and radio presets.

FAQ

Is the battery under a seat?

No — on the GMT900 Tahoe and Suburban the 12 V battery is under the hood in the engine compartment, not under the floor or a seat.

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

Anything to relearn?

The clock, radio presets, and the TPMS (relearn with the key fob after reconnecting). Note an airbag can still deploy for a short time after the battery is disconnected — keep clear of the airbag areas.

If your Tahoe stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
