Jump-Start a Dead Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Tahoe (K2XX) 2015-2020.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A dead 12 V battery will leave a 2015–2020 Chevrolet Tahoe unable to crank. Use the under-hood remote jump points, not the battery posts. This is the US-market procedure, shared with the Suburban.

  1. Park a 12 V donor close but not touching; parking brakes on, automatics in P, both ignitions off.
  2. If your Tahoe has dual batteries, use the passenger-side main battery (not the driver-side auxiliary). Open the red cover over the remote positive (+).
  3. Clamp red (+) to the Tahoe’s remote positive, then to the donor’s positive (+).
  4. Clamp black (−) to the donor’s negative (−), then to the metal bracket that supports the resonator on the Tahoe’s engine — not the dead battery’s negative post.
  5. Start the donor, run it a while, start the Tahoe, then remove the cables in the exact reverse order.

FAQ

Which battery on a dual-battery truck?

Always the passenger-side main battery — never jump from the driver-side auxiliary battery.

Where’s the ground point?

A heavy unpainted engine point — the resonator-support bracket — not the dead battery’s negative terminal.

It won’t start.

Let the donor run first and check the clamps; a repeat failure means the battery or alternator needs testing.

If your Tahoe stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
