Jump-Start a Dead Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Civic Mk7 (ES/EP) 2001-2005.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

A flat 12 V battery will stop a 2001–2005 Honda Civic cranking. Honda has you ground the last clamp to the body’s grounding strap, not the engine or the dead battery. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Park a 12 V donor close but not touching; transmission in Park/Neutral, parking brake on, all accessories off.
  2. Connect the red (+) cable to the Civic’s positive (+), then to the donor’s positive (+).
  3. Connect the black (−) cable to the donor’s negative (−), then the other end to the Civic’s grounding strap (as shown in the manual) — not any other part of the engine.
  4. Run the donor at a fast idle, start the Civic, then remove the cables in reverse order.

FAQ

Where exactly do I ground?

To the body’s grounding strap, as the manual illustrates — not the dead battery’s negative terminal or a random engine point.

Can I push-start a manual Civic?

It’s possible on a manual but not recommended — jumper cables or a jump pack are safer for the catalytic converter.

It died again after disconnecting.

The battery or alternator likely needs testing.

If your Civic stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
