Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 12, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Honda Accord Mk10 (CV) 2018-2022.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2018–2022 Honda Accord you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure (gas models).

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the battery is in the engine compartment, with a condition sensor on the negative terminal.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last.
  5. Reactivate the audio system and reset the clock. You may need to recalibrate the TPMS afterward.

FAQ

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last.

What resets afterward?

The audio system and clock; recalibrate the indirect TPMS once pressures are correct.

Can I ground an accessory to the battery post?

No — a sensor on the negative cable monitors the battery; ground add-ons to the body instead.

If your Accord stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
