Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Impala Mk9 (W-body) 2006-2013.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2006–2013 Chevrolet Impala (W-body) uses the GM Oil Life System and shows CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON when a service is due. After an oil and filter change you reset it from the Driver Information Center. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Switch the ignition to ON/RUN with the engine off.
  2. Use the vehicle-information button to display OIL LIFE REMAINING on the DIC.
  3. Press and hold the SET/RESET button for more than five seconds until the oil life changes to 100%.

If CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON returns at the next start, the reset didn’t take — repeat it. (This generation uses the SET/RESET button, not an accelerator-pedal method.)

FAQ

Is there a gas-pedal reset?

No — on the 2006–2013 Impala you hold the DIC SET/RESET button on the OIL LIFE REMAINING screen.

What oil does it take?

SAE 5W-30 (GM6094M) — about 4.0 qt with a filter on the 3.5L and 3.9L V6.

When should I reset it?

After every oil change; if reset by mistake, change the oil within 3,000 miles.

If your Impala stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
