Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Chevrolet Impala Mk9 (W-body) 2006-2013.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2006–2013 Chevrolet Impala you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, doors closed a couple of minutes; eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood; the 12 V battery is in the engine compartment.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last and tighten both.
  5. Reset the clock and radio presets.

FAQ

Is the battery in the trunk or under a seat?

No — on the 2006–2013 Impala the battery is under the hood in the engine compartment.

Which cable first?

Negative off first, negative on last. Note an airbag can still deploy for a short time after the battery is disconnected.

Anything to relearn?

Clock, presets, and the TPMS (relearn with the key fob).

If your Impala stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
