Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Kia Rio Mk4 (YB) 2017-2023. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The Kia Rio Mk4 (YB/FB, 2017–2023) — the fourth-generation Rio supermini, built primarily in Sohari (South Korea) and Yantai (China) for European sale, sold in pre-facelift (2017–2020) and facelift (2020–2023) variants — uses one of two short reset paths depending on whether your Rio has the multifunction steering wheel or only the cluster-mounted controls. Both are owner-accessible without any diagnostic tool. The procedure is identical across every Mk4 Rio engine variant (1.0 T-GDi turbo, 1.2 / 1.4 MPi petrol, 1.4 / 1.5 CRDi diesel).

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing an oil and filter change.
  • If the spanner / wrench symbol with “Service required” appears on the cluster at startup.
  • If you bought the Rio second-hand and the previous owner didn’t clear the indicator.

⚠️ On the Mk4 Rio the service indicator tracks the oil-change distance counter. Other items (brake fluid every 2 years, coolant at the manufacturer’s interval, timing belt on the 1.4 / 1.5 CRDi diesel at 90,000 miles, the 1.0 T-GDi and MPi petrols use a non-serviceable chain) aren’t tracked by the cluster.

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface with the engine off. Complete the actual oil and filter change before the reset.
  • Identify your Rio’s controls:
    • Method 1 — for trims with the multifunction steering wheel. Uses the steering-wheel OK button.
    • Method 2 — for basic trims without multifunction controls. Uses the cluster-mounted RESET button at the bottom of the instrument cluster face.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset itself. For the oil change: fresh Kia-spec oil — 5W-30 ACEA A5/B5 for the 1.2 / 1.4 MPi petrol engines, 5W-20 ACEA A5/B5 for the 1.0 T-GDi turbo (the lighter grade is the official Kia spec for the small turbo for better fuel economy), 5W-30 ACEA C2/C3 for the 1.4 / 1.5 CRDi diesels (DPF-compatible); a new spin-on filter (different parts per engine family); a 17 mm sump-plug socket (petrol) or 19 mm (CRDi); torque about 35 Nm (petrol) or 50 Nm (CRDi).

Method 1 — Multifunction Steering Wheel (Most Mk4 Rio Trims)

  1. Turn the ignition ON with the engine off. Key position II on key-start trims; on Smart Key trims press START/STOP without a foot on the brake.
  2. Wait a moment for the cluster to fully wake.
  3. Press the OK button on the steering wheel.
  4. The cluster’s central display switches to the menu view.
  5. Press and hold the OK button for between 1 and 5 seconds. Anywhere in this window will commit.
  6. Release the button. The cluster shows the new service interval — the reset is complete.
  7. Switch the ignition off to exit.

Method 2 — Basic Trim Without Multifunction Wheel

On basic Rio trims that don’t have the steering-wheel OK button (very basic Mk4 1 grade), the reset uses a dedicated RESET button mounted on the cluster face — typically a small black button at the bottom-right of the speedometer.

  1. Turn the ignition ON.
  2. Press the RESET button on the cluster and hold for 5 seconds.
  3. Release. The service indicator is reset.
  4. Switch the ignition off.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 30 seconds, then cycle ignition back on. The Service required / spanner warning should be gone. On Method 1, press the OK button to see the menu again — the Service Interval line should now show the full new distance value (typically 10,000 miles / 15,000 km or 12 months for European-spec Mk4 Rio on petrol; the CRDi diesel uses 12,500 miles / 20,000 km or 24 months).

Troubleshooting

  • (Method 1) OK button just refreshes the trip display rather than triggering the reset. The Mk4 Rio’s OK button has two functions: a quick press triggers the short prompt, a 1-5 second hold from the menu view commits. Make sure you’ve pressed once first (which opens the menu), then start the hold immediately.
  • (Method 2) The RESET button does nothing. Two common causes: (a) the ignition is in ACC instead of full ON — turn one more click on key-start, or press START/STOP a second time on Smart Key; (b) the service-interval feature isn’t active yet — the cluster only accepts the reset when the next service is within range of being due. If your Rio has plenty of distance left, the button has nothing to reset.
  • Reset works but the warning comes back after a few miles. 12V battery condition. The Mk4 Rio cluster is sensitive to cold-crank voltage drop. Load-test the battery; replace if older than 5 years.
  • I have a 1.0 T-GDi mild-hybrid Rio — same procedure? The Mk4 Rio’s 1.0 T-GDi 48V mild-hybrid (post-2020 facelift, EU-specific) uses the same cluster and the same reset paths as standard variants. The mild-hybrid system uses a separate small auxiliary 12V battery alongside the main one — load-test both if the reset doesn’t persist.
  • 2020 facelift Rio — anything different? The 2020 facelift updated the front-end styling, added the 1.0 T-GDi mild-hybrid option, and added the 8-inch UVO Connect touchscreen on higher trims, but kept the cluster firmware and reset paths unchanged.
  • I drive a Kia Stonic from the same era — is the procedure similar? The Kia Stonic (2017–2023) shares the Mk4 Rio’s YB platform and cluster, with the same reset path. We’ll publish a dedicated Stonic guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the spanner symbol on the Kia Rio mean?

On the Mk4 Rio the spanner / wrench icon is the oil-change reminder. It illuminates when the cluster’s service-distance counter reaches the configured threshold. It does not indicate an engine fault. Engine faults trigger the orange check-engine light (an engine-outline icon, different shape).

How often does the Mk4 Rio service indicator come up?

Kia’s official European-market schedule for the Mk4 Rio:

  • 1.2 / 1.4 MPi petrol: 10,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.0 T-GDi turbo petrol: 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.0 T-GDi 48V MHEV (post-2020): 10,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.4 / 1.5 CRDi diesel: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 24 months.

UK severe-service / short-trip driving typically halves the petrol interval to 5,000 miles or 6 months.

Does the reset clear engine fault codes?

No. The reset zeros the service-distance counter only. Engine fault codes are stored in the engine ECU and need a scan tool. For DTC interpretation see autodtcs.com.

Will this work on the Kia Rio Mk5?

The Kia Rio Mk5 hasn’t launched yet in European markets — current global Rio sales are still the YB facelift. When the Mk5 arrives, we’ll publish a dedicated guide.

And the Mk3 Rio (UB, 2011–2017)?

The Mk3 Rio (UB) uses an older cluster with a slightly different menu structure. Different procedure — see our forthcoming Mk3 Rio guide.

Is the procedure similar to the Hyundai i20 Mk2?

Yes. The Hyundai i20 Mk2 (GB, 2014–2020) is the platform-sister car to the Mk4 Rio — same Hyundai-Kia B-segment platform, very similar cluster firmware. The OK hold from the Service due menu works on both. Procedure essentially identical.

Will resetting the indicator extend my Kia 7-year warranty?

No. The 7-year warranty depends on actual service work being performed with documented service-book stamps, not on what the cluster reports.
