Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Škoda Fabia Mk3 (NJ, 2015–2023) is a routine job for a battery change or before electrical work, but the car loses a few settings when the power goes and start/stop cars have a battery sensor that needs care. This guide covers the safe order of work and what to reset once the leads are back on.
Where the Battery Is
The battery is in the engine compartment under a plastic cover. Lift the cover to reach the two clamps. Cars with start/stop have a battery monitoring control unit clamped on the negative terminal — take care with its wiring. Start/stop cars also use an AGM/EFB battery; replace like-for-like.
Before You Disconnect
- Check your audio system security code and note your presets in case the head unit asks for them.
- Ensure all electrical consumers are switched off and the ignition key is OFF (remove the key, or keep a keyless fob away from the car).
- To keep settings alive, plug in a memory-saver. The steps below assume you are not using one.
- If working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, the battery must be disconnected first.
Disconnecting — Correct Order
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- Open the bonnet and lift off the battery cover.
- On start/stop cars, first disconnect the battery control-unit (sensor) wiring on the negative terminal.
- Slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear, tucking it aside.
- Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.
Reconnecting — Correct Order
- Reconnect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead, and finally reconnect the control-unit wiring on start/stop cars.
- Tighten both clamps firmly — a loose earth is a classic cause of random electrical faults.
- Turn the ignition on for a few seconds before starting the engine.
What to Reset Afterwards
- Reset the date and time and re-enter the radio code/presets and user preferences.
- Check the operation of the power windows — if the one-touch stops working, hold each switch fully up for a couple of seconds to re-teach the closed position.
- Check for stored fault codes. A power interruption can leave a transient code; many self-clear within a short drive.
If the Dash Still Warns
One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal and should clear within a short drive. If an ESC, airbag or engine light remains, a fault code was logged during the power interruption. Reading it needs a diagnostic tool; you can look up what a code means on our sister site autodtcs.com.

- 10 mm spanner/socket for the terminal clamps (13 mm for the hold-down).
