Replace the Keycard Battery

These instructions apply to the Renault Captur Mk1 (X87) 2013-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the keycard for your Renault Captur Mk1 (X87, 2013–2020) only works from up close, won’t lock the car, or the hands-free start has become unreliable, the keycard’s coin battery is almost always the cause — and it is a quick change. This guide shows how to renew the Renault keycard battery and what needs a dealer.

First, Rule Out the Battery

A weak keycard battery is the number-one reason a Captur remote becomes unreliable — short range, needing several presses, or hands-free entry/start failing. The Renault keycard uses a coin cell (commonly a CR2025 — check yours when you open it).

Replacing the Keycard Battery

  1. Press and hold the release button and pull out the emergency (mechanical) key from the keycard.
  2. Remove the battery cover revealed by removing the key.
  3. Lift out the old coin cell.
  4. Fit the new cell observing the correct polarity (the same way the old one sat).
  5. Refit the cover and the emergency key. Test the keycard.

After a battery change the keycard keeps its programming — no re-pairing needed.

Lost Keycard or Adding a Spare

The Captur cannot have a keycard programmed at home. A lost or extra keycard must be ordered and coded by a Renault dealer or an auto-locksmith with the right equipment — it is security-locked to the car. The home job is limited to renewing the battery in a card that already works.

If a Fresh Battery Doesn’t Fix It

  • Check the cell type and polarity — a coin cell fitted the wrong way gives no response.
  • Use the emergency key (hidden in the card) to unlock the door, and hold the keycard against the marked spot on the dash / in the reader to start with a flat battery.
  • Still nothing? A receiver or card-reader fault may be involved — check the code on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Captur keycard take?

A coin cell, commonly a CR2025 — open the card to confirm before buying.

Do I need to reprogram after changing the battery?

No — programming is retained. Just fit the new cell the right way round and test.

Can I program a new Captur keycard myself?

No — the keycard is security-locked and must be ordered and coded by a Renault dealer or locksmith.

How do I start the car if the keycard is dead?

Hold the keycard against the marked location (often by the steering column / start button) so the car can read it, then press start.

If the keycard stopped working after a battery disconnection, see our Renault Captur battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
