Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Renault Captur Mk1 (X87) 2013-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The Renault Captur Mk1 (X87, 2013–2020) — the first-generation Captur compact crossover built on the Renault-Nissan B platform shared with the Clio Mk4, manufactured in Valladolid (Spain) for European sale across pre-facelift (2013–2017) and facelift (2017–2020) variants with an engine range covering 0.9 TCe 90 (H4B-400/H4B-408/H4B-410, 66 kW petrol with optional LPG), 1.2 16V (D4F, 55 kW petrol), 1.2 TCe 120 (H5F-403/H5F-408, 87/88 kW), 1.3 TCe 130 / 150 (H5H, 96/110 kW, 2018+), 1.5 dCi 90 / 110 (K9K, 66/81 kW diesel), and the short-lived 0.9 TCe LPG (66 kW dual-fuel) — uses Renault’s wiper-stalk reset-button hold method via the cluster MFD. The procedure is identical across every X87 engine variant and across both pre-facelift and facelift cars. No diagnostic tool needed.

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing an oil and filter change at the scheduled interval.
  • If the cluster shows “Service required” or “Service due in 0 km” at startup.
  • After a scheduled inspection service that includes an oil change.

⚠️ Renault’s own documentation explicitly warns: “Do not reset the indicator if the oil is changed sooner than indicated.” Resetting at, say, 5,000 miles when the algorithm called for 10,000 will throw off the next service prediction and may leave the engine running degraded oil if you skip the next genuine signal.

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface with the engine off.
  • Complete the actual oil and filter change before the reset.
  • ⚠️ Do not press any of the pedals during the reset — Renault’s cluster firmware checks for pedal input and may abort the reset if you accidentally touch the brake or clutch.
  • If your Captur has the keyless entry / Smart card system: insert the key card into the dashboard slot below the start/stop button before pressing START.
  • Locate the reset button on the wiper-control stalk — a small round button on the end face of the right-hand stalk (sometimes marked with a small clock or wrench icon). This is the same button used to scroll the trip MFD during normal driving.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset itself. For the oil change, fresh Renault-spec oil — 5W-30 ACEA C4 / Renault RN 0720 for the 1.5 dCi K9K diesel (the K9K is famously specific about oil spec — using anything other than RN 0720 risks oil-pump pickup blockage); 5W-40 ACEA A3/B4 / Renault RN 0700 for the 0.9 / 1.2 TCe petrol engines; 0W-30 ACEA C3 / Renault RN 17 FE for the 1.3 TCe H5H (2018+). A new spin-on or cartridge filter (different parts for K9K diesel and H4B/H5F petrol — the K9K has a particularly small filter element); a 13 mm sump-plug socket; torque 20 Nm. Capacity: 0.9 TCe takes 4.2 L with filter; 1.2 TCe takes 4.5 L; 1.3 TCe takes 4.5 L; 1.5 dCi K9K takes 4.5 L.

The Service Reset Procedure

  1. (Keyless / Smart card cars) Insert the key card into the dashboard slot.
  2. Without pressing any pedals, briefly press the start/stop button to turn the ignition on. Do not start the engine.
  3. Use the cluster MFD controls (or the wiper-stalk scroll) to navigate the trip-info menus.
  4. Select ‘Service due in’ or ‘Service required’ from the menu, depending on what the cluster currently shows.
  5. Press and hold the reset button on the right-hand wiper-control stalk.
  6. Keep the reset button pressed for at least 10 seconds.
  7. The new service interval distance appears on the display — typically “Service due in 18,000 km” or equivalent.
  8. The service indicator is now reset.
  9. Release the reset button.
  10. Turn the ignition off. Reset complete.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 30 seconds, then cycle back on (without pressing pedals). The “Service required” / “Service due in” warning should now show the fresh full interval. Typical X87 Captur intervals:

  • 0.9 / 1.2 TCe petrol: 18,000 miles (29,000 km) or 24 months — Renault’s standard long-life schedule.
  • 1.3 TCe (2018+): 18,000 miles (29,000 km) or 24 months.
  • 1.5 dCi diesel: 18,000 miles (29,000 km) or 24 months (with RN 0720 oil).
  • 0.9 TCe LPG: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 12 months — LPG mode shortens the interval to compensate for LPG fuel-side wear.

UK severe-service / short-trip driving requires halving the interval manually — Renault’s 24-month figure is for steady motorway-biased use. The dCi diesel particularly benefits from a shorter interval in city use because the K9K is prone to short-trip oil dilution.

Troubleshooting

  • The wiper-stalk reset button does nothing. Confirm the cluster MFD shows “Service required” or “Service due in X km” — the reset only fires from that screen. Use the wiper-stalk scroll wheel to cycle through trip-info screens until the service item appears, then start the 10-second hold.
  • The reset starts but then stops partway. You touched a pedal — Renault firmware aborts. Restart from step 1: ignition off, no pedals, press start, navigate to Service menu, hold reset.
  • I held the button for 10 seconds but no new interval appeared. Continue holding past 10 seconds — some firmware versions need 12–15 seconds. Don’t release until the new interval displays.
  • The reset takes but the warning returns at the next start. 12V battery condition. Load-test; replace if older than 5 years on Start-Stop cars. The Captur’s auxiliary battery (Start-Stop trims) is also a known weak point — check both.
  • I have an old (non-Smart-card) Captur — same procedure? Yes. For non-keyless cars just turn the key to “ON” position II without pressing the clutch (skip steps 1 + 2 of the procedure). The reset button + 10-second hold sequence is unchanged.
  • 2017 facelift Captur — anything different? The 2017 facelift updated the front-end styling, added the larger R-Link 2 infotainment screen, and refreshed interior trim, but kept the cluster MFD and the wiper-stalk reset button unchanged. Procedure unchanged.
  • Captur 1.5 dCi diesel — anything different? No, same procedure. But: only use Renault RN 0720 oil — using a non-RN 0720 5W-30 voids the algorithm and can cause oil-pump pickup blockage in the K9K.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the “Service due in” or “Service required” message on the Captur mean?

The “Service due in X km” message is a countdown to the next scheduled service. When it reaches “Service required” (0 km / 0 days), the algorithm wants the service done. It’s a scheduled-maintenance signal, not an engine fault — the orange CEL / engine-check warning is separate.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No. The wiper-stalk reset button method is the owner-accessible standard procedure. Renault CLIP and aftermarket Renault-aware tools can also reset via OBD-II, but they’re not needed.

Does the reset clear engine fault codes?

No. The reset zeros the service-distance counter only. Engine fault codes need a scan tool. For DTC interpretation see autodtcs.com.

Why does Renault warn about not pressing pedals?

The cluster firmware uses pedal input as a signal that the driver is preparing to drive — the reset routine is locked out when any pedal is depressed to prevent accidental resets while the car is in motion or about to move. It’s a safety/data-integrity measure rather than a procedural quirk.

Is the procedure the same as the Renault Clio Mk4?

Yes — the X87 Captur and Renault Clio Mk4 (X98, 2012–2019) share the same Renault B-platform cluster and the same wiper-stalk reset button. The procedure is identical, including the 10-second hold and the “no pedals” requirement. The Megane III/IV and Kadjar use the same method too.

How often does the Captur service indicator come up?

Renault’s published interval for the X87 Captur is 18,000 miles (29,000 km) or 24 months on petrol and standard diesel, dropping to 12,500 miles / 12 months on the LPG dual-fuel variant. UK city-biased use typically signals earlier; the dCi diesel particularly so due to oil dilution from short trips.

What about the Captur Mk2 (XJB/HJB, 2020+)?

The Mk2 Captur (XJB, 2020–) uses Renault’s newer EasyLink infotainment and a digital cluster on higher trims. The reset path moves into the digital cluster’s menu rather than the wiper-stalk hold. We’ll publish a dedicated XJB guide.
