Turn the Start-Stop System On or Off

These instructions apply to the Nissan Qashqai Mk3 (J12) 2021-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

Your Nissan Qashqai Mk3 (J12, 2021–present) has an engine start/stop system that switches the engine off when you come to a halt and restarts it as you pull away. It saves fuel, but some drivers prefer it off in traffic. This guide shows how to switch it off, and why it sometimes won’t engage.

How Start/Stop Works on the Qashqai

When you brake to a stop (and conditions allow), the system shuts the engine down. Lifting the brake restarts it. As a mild-hybrid (mHEV), the Qashqai’s belt-driven starter-generator makes the restart smooth and quick.

How to Switch It Off

  1. With the engine running, find the start/stop OFF button on the dashboard (an “A” inside a circular arrow).
  2. Press it once. “Start/stop deactivated” appears on the display and the system is off.
  3. The engine now idles normally at a stop.

How to Switch It Back On

Press the button again, or simply restart the car — the system defaults back to ON every time you switch the ignition off and on.

Why It Sometimes Won’t Activate

  • The engine is not yet up to temperature.
  • The battery charge is low — common after a battery change or short trips.
  • Cabin heating or demisting needs the engine running.
  • The steering is turned, or the car is on a slope.

If it stopped working entirely after a battery disconnection, the battery needs to recharge and may need its monitoring reset — see our Qashqai battery guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Qashqai remember my start/stop setting?

No — it resets to ON every time you restart the car. Press the OFF button each drive if you prefer it disabled.

Is it bad to keep using start/stop?

No. The Qashqai’s mild-hybrid starter and enhanced battery are built for it, and it skips stops when the battery is low to protect itself.

Why did it stop working after a flat battery?

It only runs when the battery is well charged and its state is known. After a jump-start or battery change it stays dormant until charge recovers (and the monitoring is reset); a few longer drives usually restore it.

Can I turn it off permanently?

Not from the dashboard — the button is per-drive only. A permanent change would need dealer-level configuration.

If a warning light appeared alongside the fault, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our Nissan Qashqai service indicator reset guide.
