These instructions apply to the Opel Zafira Mk1 (T98) 1999-2005.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Zafira A (T98, 1999–2005) is a simple job for a battery change or before electrical work. There’s no battery registration on this generation, but you should have your radio security code ready and re-teach the windows (and sunroof, if fitted) afterwards. This guide covers the safe order of work.

Where the Battery Is

The battery is in the engine bay. Lift any cover to reach the two terminal clamps. If you are renewing it, fit a like-for-like battery of the same size and rating.

Before You Disconnect

  • Check the audio system security code — the radio locks after a power loss and needs the code to come back to life.
  • Note any stored settings (clock, presets).
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key.

Disconnecting — Correct Order

  1. Turn the ignition off and open the bonnet.
  2. Slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
  3. Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.

Reconnecting — Correct Order

  1. Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition on for a few seconds before starting the engine.

What to Reset Afterwards

  • Enter the radio code and reset the clock and presets (the “volatile memories” clear when power is cut).
  • Re-initialise the power windows — one-touch won’t work until re-taught (see our window initialise guide).
  • Re-initialise the sunroof if fitted (see our sunroof initialise guide).

If a Warning Light Stays On

One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal and should clear on a short drive. If the airbag or engine light stays on, a fault code was logged — reading it needs an OBD scanner, and you can look up what the code means on autodtcs.com.

Registering or Coding the New Battery

Cars with a battery sensor should have the battery data reset with a compatible diagnostic tool (or a dealer); older models without a sensor need only a short relearn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to register a new battery on a Zafira A?

No — this generation has no battery coding. Fit the correct battery and enter the radio code afterwards.

Will I lose my radio?

The unit locks and asks for its security code after a power loss. Have the code ready (owner’s wallet card or a dealer), or use a memory-saver to avoid it.

Why won’t my windows go up on auto after the battery change?

Disconnecting power clears the window motors’ learned positions. Run the simple re-initialise routine and one-touch returns.
