If the one-touch (auto up) function on your Zafira A (T98, 1999–2005) has stopped working — usually after a battery disconnection or a flat battery — the window needs re-initialising so it relearns its closed position. It is a 20-second job per window with no tools. This guide shows how. It is a normal side-effect of losing power, not a sign of a failed motor or switch, so nothing needs replacing.
Why One-Touch Stops Working
The window motor remembers its top (closed) position so the auto function and anti-trap (pinch protection) know where the glass stops. Cutting power clears that memory, so the window only moves while you hold the switch. Re-initialising restores it.
How It Works on This Model
On the Zafira A the front windows use a motor that counts its own travel to know where the glass sits. That count is what lets a single lift of the switch run the window all the way to the top and stop it cleanly at the seal, and it is also what the anti-trap function relies on to sense resistance and reverse. When the 12 V supply is broken — a disconnected battery, a flat battery, or even a pulled fuse — the stored top position is wiped. The window then falls back to a safe manual mode, moving only while the switch is held, until you teach it the closed limit again.
Before You Begin
- Close all the doors so the glass seats fully at the top.
- Turn the ignition on so the window has full power for the learn.
- Keep fingers and objects clear of the glass — anti-trap may be inactive until the limit is set.
- Have the correct switch to hand — each front door re-teaches from its own switch.
- If the battery was just reconnected, wait a moment for voltage to settle.
How to Re-initialise a Zafira A Window
- Close all the doors.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Press and hold the window close switch until the window is fully closed.
- With the window fully closed, keep the switch pressed for 2 more seconds.
- Release the switch.
- Repeat for the passenger’s window using that door’s switch.
If It Still Won’t Auto-Close
- Repeat the procedure — the 2-second hold at the top is what registers the limit.
- Make sure the glass reaches the very top — grit or perished runners can stop it short on a car of this age.
- Clean and lightly lubricate the runners if the glass drags, then run the sequence again.
- Check the window fuse if the glass won’t move at all, even held.
- Use a charged battery — a weak 12 V can sag under motor load and abort the learn.
- Don’t release early — letting go before the 2 seconds are up cancels the relearn.
After the Reset
With the top position relearned, a single press of the close switch should run the glass to the seal on its own and stop cleanly, and the anti-trap protection will react again if the window meets an obstruction. The setting is held in memory, so it stays working through everyday use — you’ll only repeat this after the next power loss.

Why did my Zafira windows lose auto after the battery was off?
Disconnecting power wipes the stored closed position, so auto and anti-trap switch off until you re-teach each window. The motor no longer knows where the top of travel is, so it defaults to safe hold-to-move operation. Running the close-and-hold routine writes the limit back and both features return.
The window goes up a bit then stops — why?
That’s the anti-trap protection reacting because the limit isn’t learned. Complete the hold-at-the-top routine and it clears. Until the motor knows its true closed position it treats the resistance near the top as an obstruction and stops or reverses. Teaching the limit tells it where the glass is meant to seat.
Do I need any tools?
No — just the door switch and the ignition on. There is no menu and no scan tool involved; the whole job is done by holding the switch through its travel and pausing at the top. It can be repeated as often as needed with no harm to the motor.
Do I have to re-teach both front windows?
Only the ones that lost auto. A power loss usually affects both powered front windows, so if both dropped to manual, re-teach each from its own door switch. Any window that still runs on a single press has kept its memory and needs nothing done.
Could a bad window switch cause this instead?
It can, but a switch fault usually shows as the window not moving at all, or only in one direction, rather than simply losing one-touch. Lost memory still lets the glass move while you hold the switch. If the relearn won’t take after several careful tries, a worn switch or motor may be at fault.
Is it safe to keep re-running the sequence?
Yes. The relearn just drives the window to its stop and holds, which the motor does in normal use anyway, so repeating it causes no harm. Keep hands clear of the glass while learning, as anti-trap may not act until the limit is set. If it still won’t take, check the runners and fuse before suspecting a part.
