Home/Opel/Zafira/Mk1 (T98) 1999-2005/Replace the Key Fob Battery

Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Opel Zafira Mk1 (T98) 1999-2005. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the remote on your Zafira A (T98, 1999–2005) has become weak — you have to be close to the car to lock or unlock — the fob’s coin cell needs replacing. It’s a quick job with a small screwdriver. This guide shows how.

What You Need

  • A fresh coin cell to match the one you remove (these Vauxhall/Opel remotes typically use a CR2032).
  • A small flat-blade screwdriver.

How to Replace the Battery

  1. Insert a screwdriver into the seam of the key and remove the key cover.
  2. Separate the two halves of the case.
  3. Lift out the old coin cell, noting which way up it sits.
  4. Fit the new cell the same way round.
  5. Refit the cases and the cover, then check the remote locks and unlocks the car.

If the Remote Still Doesn’t Work

On cars of this age the remote occasionally needs re-synchronising after a dead battery: with the new cell fitted, put the key in the ignition and turn to ON, or lock/unlock with the key in the door, then try the remote again. If it’s still unresponsive, the fob may have a worn switch or internal fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Zafira A remote take?

Most take a CR2032 coin cell, but match the one you remove to be sure — a few three-button remotes used a different size.

My remote still won’t work with a fresh cell — now what?

Check the cell orientation and that the contacts are clean. Try re-synchronising by cycling the ignition or locking with the key in the door. If it’s still dead, the fob may need replacing.

Do I need to program the key after a battery change?

No — the coin-cell swap doesn’t affect the key’s coding. Only a brand-new key needs programming by a dealer or auto locksmith.
