Home/Volkswagen/Golf/Mk8 (CD) 2020-Present/Reset the Service Indicator

Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD) 2020-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

After a service, the Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD, 2020–present) shows an “Inspection” / spanner reminder in the Digital Cockpit. Unlike the older trip-button Golfs, the Mk8 resets through the cluster “Service” menu using the steering-wheel / wiper-stalk button. This guide shows the exact sequence, no tools or dealer visit needed.

What the Reminder Means

The service reminder is mileage/time-based (Oil service or Inspection) and simply flags that the next scheduled service is due. It is a reminder, not a fault — reset it once the work has been done.

How to Reset the Golf Mk8 Service Reminder

  1. Turn the ignition on (do not start the engine).
  2. Scroll the Digital Cockpit / cluster display to the “Driving time / distance covered” (trip) view.
  3. Press and hold the reset/OK button (the cluster button on the wiper stalk, or the steering-wheel OK button) for 6–9 seconds.
  4. The “Service” menu opens.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm the reset (select the Oil service / Inspection reset and confirm).

If your Golf only offers the reset via a workshop scan tool, that’s the alternative method — but the menu route above works on the standard car.

If It Didn’t Reset

  • Wrong screen: make sure the trip / “driving time” view is showing before you hold the button.
  • Held too briefly: the Service menu only appears after 6–9 seconds of holding.
  • No reset offered: on a fixed-interval (Time & Distance) service plan the option still appears; on flexible (LongLife) plans the figures recalculate after a drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does resetting the reminder change anything mechanical?

No — it only restarts the service-interval counter. Always do the actual oil/inspection work before resetting.

Which button do I hold on the Mk8?

The cluster button on the end of the wiper stalk, or the OK button on the steering wheel — whichever your car uses to confirm cluster menus. Hold it on the trip screen for 6–9 seconds.

Why does the reminder come back?

If it returns immediately, the reset didn’t confirm — repeat with the trip view showing and follow the Service menu prompts.

Is the spanner the same as a warning light?

No — the spanner/service reminder is a schedule prompt. A separate warning light (engine, oil pressure) is a fault — look those up on autodtcs.com.

After a battery change you may also need to re-initialise the windows — see our Golf Mk8 battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
