Weak remote on your Dacia Duster Mk2 (HM, 2018–present)? If you have to stand close to lock or unlock, or a “key battery low” message has appeared, the coin cell needs renewing. The Duster came with two different remotes — a flip key and a hands-free card — and they take different cells, so check yours before buying. This guide covers both.
Which Cell Your Remote Takes
- Flip key (blade folds out): a small coin cell — commonly a CR1620 (some use a CR2016). Read the marking on the old cell to be sure.
- Hands-free card (the flat credit-card style remote): a CR2032.
Whichever you have, the rule is the same: match the number printed on the cell you remove.
How to Replace the Cell
- Flip key: fold out / release the emergency blade, then slide or prise the cover off with a small screwdriver to reach the cell. Card: slide the back cover off (some have a small screw or release notch).
- Use a small screwdriver to lever out the old cell, noting which way up it sits.
- Fit the new cell the same way round, handling it by the edges (finger grease shortens coin-cell life).
- Refit the cover (and blade), then test lock/unlock from a normal distance.
Does It Need Programming?
No — swapping the cell doesn’t affect pairing, so the remote works straight away. A lost or extra key/card can only be ordered and coded by a Dacia dealer, which is not an owner job.
If It Still Won’t Work
Re-open it and check the cell orientation and clean contacts. With the hands-free card, you can still start by holding the card against the marked spot (or in the slot, depending on trim) and using the start button.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Dacia Duster key take?
The flip key usually takes a CR1620 (some CR2016); the hands-free card takes a CR2032. Always check the old cell.
Will the car still start with a dead remote battery?
Yes — the flip key works in the ignition as normal; the hands-free card starts the car when held against the marked reader, then you press start.
Do I need to re-pair it after the swap?
No — pairing is unaffected. Just refit and test.
Can I program a spare card myself?
No — Dacia/Renault key coding needs the dealer system. Only the battery swap is owner-doable.
