The Renault Clio Mk5 (XJA, 2019–present) has a Stop & Start system that switches the engine off when you stop to save fuel. It’s simple to turn off when you’d rather keep the engine running — here’s how, and why it sometimes won’t cut the engine in the first place.
How It Works on the Clio
Stop with the car in neutral and your foot off the clutch (manual) or on the brake (EDC auto) and the engine shuts down; press the clutch or release the brake and it restarts at once. It only operates once the engine is warm and the battery is in good shape. The E-Tech hybrid manages its own engine on/off as part of the hybrid system.
Switching It Off
- With the engine running, press the Stop & Start button — the “A” inside a circular arrow, on the dash or centre console.
- The warning light comes on to confirm it’s disabled, and the engine then idles normally at a stop.
Switching It Back On
Press the button again, or simply restart the car — Stop & Start defaults back on every time you switch the ignition off and on. There’s no menu option to make it permanently off.
Why It Sometimes Won’t Cut the Engine
- The engine isn’t warm yet, or the climate system is demanding strong heating/cooling or demist.
- The battery charge is low — common after short trips or a recent battery change; auto-stop is blocked to protect the battery.
- You’re on a slope, the steering is turned, or you haven’t fully stopped.
If it stopped working after a battery change, let the battery fully charge — see our Clio Mk5 battery guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Clio remember if I turn Stop & Start off?
No — it returns to on at every start. There’s no built-in way to keep it permanently off.
Is the constant stopping bad for the engine?
No — the Clio’s starter and battery are designed for it, and the system skips stops whenever conditions aren’t right.
Why won’t the engine auto-stop?
Usually a cold engine, a low battery, or the climate system needing the engine — all normal blocking conditions.
The Stop & Start light is on — is that a fault?
If you pressed the button, the light just shows it’s off. If you didn’t, it usually points to battery condition — worth a check if it persists.
If a warning light appeared alongside the fault, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our Clio Mk5 service reset guide.
