Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Renault Clio Mk5 (XJA) 2019-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Renault Clio Mk5 (XJA, 2019–present) is a straightforward engine-bay job. The main thing Renault asks is to let the car settle first — wait for the cooling fan and a few minutes — then disconnect in the right order. This guide covers it and what to restore afterwards.

Where the Battery Is

The 12 V battery sits in the engine compartment, under a cover. (The E-Tech full-hybrid Clio also has a separate traction battery — that’s workshop-only; only the 12 V in the engine bay is owner-serviceable.)

Disconnecting

  1. Switch the ignition off and remove the key/card from the car. If the engine’s been running, wait for the cooling fan to stop.
  2. Wait about 5 minutes for the electronics to power down.
  3. Disconnect the negative (−, black) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
  4. If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+, red) next, then the hold-down.

Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, leave the system to discharge during that 5-minute wait before going further.

Reconnecting & Restoring

  1. Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last; tighten both and refit the cover.
  2. Reset the date and time and check your personal/EASY LINK settings.
  3. If the one-touch windows only inch up afterwards, run them fully up and hold briefly to re-teach; the Clio’s wiper service position and tyre-pressure store may also want re-doing after a power cut.

The Clio doesn’t need the new battery coded, and its newer EASY LINK media isn’t code-locked, so the radio returns on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which terminal first on the Clio?

Always the negative (−) first, and reconnect it last, to avoid shorting against the body.

Why wait for the cooling fan?

The fan can run on after the engine stops; waiting avoids it starting unexpectedly while your hands are near it, and lets the modules sleep.

Will I lose my radio code?

No — the Clio Mk5’s media system isn’t code-locked. You’ll just reset the clock.

Does it need the battery registered?

No — the Clio doesn’t require battery coding. Fit it, reset the clock and you’re done.

If a warning light stays on, look it up on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our Clio Mk5 service reset guide.
