Reset the Oil Service Reminder

When the “Oil change due” message or the spanner appears on your Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017–2023), the oil-life monitor has counted down to its limit. This is a service reminder, not a fault warning — the car is telling you the current oil interval is used up. The Fiesta gives you two ways to reset it — a menu method on cars with the trip display, and a neat pedal method for basic clusters. Do the oil and filter first, then use whichever fits your car.

What the Oil-Change Message Means

The Fiesta Mk8 uses an oil-life monitor rather than a plain mileage countdown. It estimates how much useful life the oil has left from the way the car is driven — short trips, cold running and hard use shorten it, steady longer journeys stretch it — and prompts you when that estimate runs low. Because it is condition-based, the miles between reminders vary from one car to the next, which is exactly why the counter must be reset to full after each oil change so the estimate restarts from a known point.

The spanner or “Oil change due” line is a maintenance prompt only. It is not the same as an amber engine-management light or a red oil-pressure warning — those indicate a fault, need investigating, and will not clear through either reset method here.

Before You Begin

Reset the monitor only after the oil and filter have been changed. Resetting without fresh oil tells the car the old oil is new, so it’ll run past the safe point. Park on level ground with the handbrake on, switch the ignition on but leave the engine off, and decide which cluster your car has: the menu method suits cars with the central information display and steering-wheel buttons, while the pedal method covers basic clusters. No tools are needed for either.

Reset After the Oil Change Only

The Fiesta estimates oil life from how the car is driven, then prompts when it’s low. Resetting without fresh oil tells the car the old oil is new, so it’ll run past the safe point. Always change the oil and filter first.

Method 1 — Cars With the Menu Display

  1. Turn the ignition on (engine off).
  2. Using the steering-wheel buttons, scroll the display to ‘Settings’.
  3. Select ‘Information’, then ‘Oil life reset’.
  4. Press and hold ‘OK’ until the confirmation message appears.

Method 2 — Basic Cluster (Pedal Method)

  1. Turn the ignition on but do not start the engine.
  2. Fully press both the accelerator and brake pedals together and hold them.
  3. Keep holding — after about 25–30 seconds a confirmation message appears.
  4. Release both pedals together, then turn the ignition off.

If the Message Won’t Clear

  • Released too early — on the pedal method you must hold until it confirms (around 25–30 s).
  • It’s a different warning — an amber engine or oil-pressure light is a fault, not the service timer, and won’t clear this way.
  • Engine started by mistake — both methods want the ignition on with the engine off; switch off and begin again.
  • Wrong menu item — on Method 1 the counter only zeroes from the Oil life reset line held with OK, not from a general trip reset.
  • Pedals not fully down — the pedal method needs both pedals pressed all the way to the floor and held together.

After the Reset

When the reset takes, a confirmation message shows and the oil-life reading returns to full; the spanner or “Oil change due” prompt clears and stays away at the next start. Nothing else on the car is altered — the reset only affects the oil-life monitor. If the message returns the next time you switch on, the reset didn’t confirm, so run the correct method for your cluster again.

How Often You’ll Need This

Reset the oil-life monitor once after every oil-and-filter change, and only then. Because the Fiesta’s monitor is condition-based, there is no single fixed mileage to quote — the interval depends on how the car is used and the oil specification. Follow the service schedule in your owner’s handbook, and treat the on-screen prompt as the signal that the oil has reached the end of its estimated life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Fiesta use oil-life monitoring?

Yes — it estimates remaining oil life from your driving, so the mileage between resets varies. Reset to full after every oil change.

What’s the pedal trick for?

Cars without the full menu reset via the pedals: ignition on, hold accelerator + brake together until it confirms (~25–30 s).

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — both methods are done from the driver’s seat with no tools.

The spanner came back — why?

The reset didn’t confirm, or a separate fault is present. Repeat the reset; if it returns, have the car scanned.

How do I know which method my Fiesta needs?

If your cluster has a central information display you scroll with the steering-wheel buttons, use Method 1; if it’s a basic cluster without that menu, use the pedal method.

Will resetting change my trip meters or other settings?

No — it only returns the oil-life monitor to full. Trip data, clock and other settings are unaffected.

If a warning light appeared with the service message, look it up on autodtcs.com. After battery work, see our Fiesta Mk8 battery guide.
