Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Ford Fiesta Mk8 (2017-2023). For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

If the remote on your Ford Fiesta (Mk8, 2017–2023) has stopped unlocking the doors or the dash flashes “Key not detected”, the fob battery has almost certainly gone flat. You are not stranded. Every Mk8 Fiesta hides a metal emergency blade inside the fob to get you into the car, and there is a backup way to start it whether you have the standard bladed ignition or the optional KeyFree push-button system.

The Mk8 was sold in two very different starting setups, and the right method depends on which one you have. Lower trims (Trend, Zetec, many Titanium cars) use a key you physically slot in and twist. Higher trims and the ST with the KeyFree pack use a START/STOP button and never need a key in a barrel — until the fob dies. Identify yours before you start.

Start a KeyFree (Push-Button) Fiesta With a Dead Fob

If your Mk8 has the START/STOP button, the immobiliser can still read the fob at very close range using the backup transponder coil built into the button. Do this:

  1. Get into the car first with the emergency blade (see the next section) — the door buttons will not respond on a flat fob.
  2. Sit in, press the brake pedal and hold it down.
  3. Hold the flat face of the key fob directly against the START/STOP button so the transponder coil sits right on the reader behind it.
  4. With the fob still touching the button, press the button through the fob. The immobiliser powers the passive chip, recognises your key and releases the engine.
  5. The engine cranks and starts. If nothing happens the first time, rotate the fob a few degrees and try again — the read zone behind the button is small.

The Mk8 does not have a slot or cubby to drop the fob into — the touch-the-button method is the official backup for this car. A “Key not detected” message on the cluster is your cue to use it.

Unlock the Fiesta With the Emergency Key Blade

A metal blade is folded inside the fob for exactly this situation.

  1. On the back of the fob, slide the small release catch towards the keyring and pull the metal emergency blade straight out.
  2. Go to the driver’s door. On most Mk8 Fiestas the lock cylinder sits behind a small plastic cap on the door handle. Slip the blade tip into the slot at the rear edge of the cap and prise the cover off to expose the barrel.
  3. Insert the blade and turn it to unlock. This usually unlocks only the driver’s door; a second turn, or the interior central-locking button once you are in, frees the rest.
  4. If you have the standard bladed ignition rather than KeyFree, slide that same blade into the ignition barrel and turn it to start the engine as normal — a flat fob battery does not stop a twist-key Fiesta starting.

Why a Flat Battery Does Not Lock You Out

The Mk8’s immobiliser never relied on the coin cell to verify your key. Inside the fob is a passive transponder that draws its power from the car’s reader coil by induction, the same way a contactless bank card works. The dead battery only kills the long-range radio that pops the locks from across the car park. Hold the fob against the START/STOP button (or twist the blade in the ignition) and the short-range coil powers the chip directly, so the car still knows it is your key.

Replace the Key Fob Battery

  1. Slide out and remove the emergency blade first — on the Mk8 fob this releases the case.
  2. Split the fob along its seam with a thin coin or a plastic pry tool, working from the slot the blade left behind.
  3. Lift out the old cell. The Mk8 Fiesta fob uses a single CR2032 3V coin cell.
  4. Fit the new battery with the + side facing the same way as the old one, handling it by the edges so finger oils do not shorten its life.
  5. Clip the case together, push the blade back in and test the buttons. A fresh cell lasts roughly 2–3 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I hold the fob on a KeyFree Fiesta Mk8? Flat against the START/STOP button on the dash. That is where the backup reader coil sits on this car — not the steering column or a cup holder.

My Fiesta has a normal turn key. Does the dead battery stop it starting? No. The flat battery only affects the remote locking. Use the blade in the door to get in and the same blade in the ignition to start; the coin cell plays no part in starting a bladed-ignition Fiesta.

Where is the hidden door lock on the Fiesta Mk8? Behind a clip-off plastic cap on the driver’s door handle. Prise the cap from its rear edge to reveal the barrel.

Which battery does the Mk8 Fiesta fob take? A CR2032, a common 3V coin cell sold in any supermarket or hardware shop.

The car only started when I held the fob to the button — is something broken? That almost always just means the fob battery is weak or flat. Fit a fresh CR2032; if it keeps happening with a new cell, the fob’s transmitter may be failing.
