These instructions apply to the Mazda 3 Mk4 (BP) 2019-Present.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Mazda 3 Mk4 (BP, 2019–present) is a straightforward engine-bay job, and one you might tackle when renewing the battery, doing electrical or bodywork repairs that call for the power to be isolated, laying the car up over winter, or recovering after a flat. Mazda lists a specific settle-down sequence for the 3, and a couple of things need re-teaching once power is back — but nothing here is beyond a careful owner with the right spanner. Follow the order below and the car relearns cleanly.

Where the 12 V Battery Is
The 12 V battery sits in the engine compartment, under a cover. Lift the cover and you’ll find the negative (−) terminal — black, marked with a minus — and the positive (+) terminal in red under a flap. Mazda’s i-stop and, where fitted, i-ELOOP systems run off this same 12 V battery, so there’s no separate owner battery to hunt for elsewhere in the car.
Before You Start
- Make sure the ignition is fully off and every accessory — lights, climate, radio — is switched off.
- Keep the smart key away from the car so it can’t wake the electrics.
- Note your clock and any saved settings before you begin.
- Give the modules a moment to power down after the settle sequence below.
- Have the right spanner to hand, and wear gloves and eye protection.
Disconnecting
- Turn the ignition on briefly then off (Mazda’s recommended way to settle the systems), and remove the key.
- Loosen the negative (−, black) terminal first and lift the lead clear, tucking it aside so it can’t drop back onto the post.
- If you’re removing the battery, loosen the positive (+, red) next, then release the hold-down clamp and lift the battery out level.
Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait 1 minute after switching off (and allow up to 5 minutes for the system to fully discharge) before going near pyrotechnic parts.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then the negative/earth (−) last; wait about 10 seconds, then refit any connector and the cover, and close the bonnet.
- Re-initialise the power windows — one-touch and auto-up drop out after a power cut. See our Mazda 3 window guide.
- Reset the clock and check your infotainment and driver settings.
The Mazda 3 doesn’t need the 12 V battery coded, so a like-for-like swap is fit-and-go once the windows are re-taught. If you fit an i-stop-rated battery, the idle-stop system will simply resume once the battery has settled and charged.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off
- Check both terminal clamps are properly tight — a loose earth is a common cause of odd faults.
- Take a short drive; many dash messages self-clear once the car completes a few normal cycles.
- If i-stop won’t engage at first, it often needs the battery fully charged and a drive cycle or two before it re-arms.
- Re-do the window re-initialise if auto-up hasn’t come back.
- If cranking was weak before this, suspect a tired battery rather than the disconnect, and read any stored code.
Registering or Coding the New Battery
Depends on the model. i-stop models track the battery’s charge state and benefit from a reset with a diagnostic tool after a new battery; non-i-stop models need only a relearn.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Mazda 3 Mk4 battery?
In the engine compartment, under a cover. Lift it to reach the negative (−) and positive (+) terminals. The i-stop and i-ELOOP systems share this same 12 V battery, so there’s no second battery to find.
Which terminal comes off first on the Mazda 3?
Always the negative (−) first when disconnecting, and reconnect it last. That stops your spanner from shorting a live positive to the bodywork.
What do I need to reset afterwards?
Re-initialise the one-touch windows, reset the clock, and check your infotainment settings. The i-stop system re-arms itself once the battery is charged. A few messages may clear on their own after a short drive.
Does a new battery need coding?
No — the Mazda 3 doesn’t require battery registration. Fit a like-for-like battery (i-stop-rated if the car has idle-stop), re-teach the windows, and reset the clock.
Will I lose my radio?
No — the Mazda 3’s infotainment isn’t code-locked, so it comes straight back. You’ll just need to reset the clock and re-check any personalised display settings.
Can I jump-start it instead of disconnecting?
If the aim is simply to start a flat car, a jump-start is the quicker route and keeps the memory alive. Disconnecting is for battery renewal or when repairs need the power isolated — different jobs.
