Set the Windscreen Wipers to Service Position

These instructions apply to the Vauxhall Astra Mk8 (L) 2022-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

To change the wiper blades on a Vauxhall Astra Mk8 (L, 2022–present) you first move the wipers into their service position so the arms lift clear of the bonnet. If you just switch off, they park low where they’re awkward to reach. It’s a quick stalk routine.

Why There’s a Service Position

The Astra parks its wiper arms low against the scuttle. Lifting them from there risks bending an arm against the bonnet. The service position raises them so they swing away freely.

How to Set the Astra Mk8 Wiper Service Position

  1. Make sure the wipers are parked and the bonnet is closed.
  2. Turn the ignition off (power the car down).
  3. Within 1 minute of switching off, operate the wipers with the stalk (a single wipe command).
  4. The wipers rise to the service position and stop.
  5. Lift the arms off the glass and renew the blades.

Returning the Wipers to Normal

Fold the arms back down onto the screen, then turn the ignition on — the wipers move back to their normal parked position.

If It Doesn’t Work

  • You waited too long — the command only works within about 1 minute of switching off; power down and try again promptly.
  • Blades frozen — free them gently first, or the motor may stall.
  • Wipers mid-wipe — let them finish and park before switching off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I lift the Astra Mk8 wipers to change the blades?

Within a minute of switching the car off, operate the wiper stalk — the wipers rise to the service position.

Do I need any tools?

No — just the ignition and the wiper stalk.

How do I get them back down?

Fold the arms onto the screen and turn the ignition on — they return to park.

Can I lift them at the parked position instead?

Best not to — forcing them against the bonnet can bend an arm. Use the service position.
