When a service item — engine oil, brake fluid, vehicle check — comes due on your BMW 3 Series Mk7 (G20, 2019–present), the dash shows it under Condition Based Servicing (CBS). These are scheduled maintenance prompts, not fault warnings: the car is tracking each item and telling you which one is now due. You reset each item yourself from the iDrive/cluster service menu once the work is done. Here’s how it works and how to clear each item cleanly.

What CBS Is
Condition Based Servicing is BMW’s way of managing maintenance item by item rather than through a single service light. Instead of one global countdown, the G20 tracks separate items — engine oil, brake fluid, front and rear brake pads, the general vehicle check, and others depending on specification — and shows each one’s remaining life as a percentage or a distance/time to go. Some items are condition-monitored (engine oil and brake wear respond to how the car is actually used), while others are date-driven (brake fluid and the vehicle check run to time). Because each item is tracked independently, you reset only the ones you have just serviced, leaving the rest counting down as normal.
None of these are fault lights. The CBS prompts are maintenance reminders; genuine red or amber warnings for the engine, brakes or other systems are separate and will not clear by resetting a CBS item.
Getting Ready
Reset a CBS item only after that item’s work has actually been carried out. A little preparation keeps the menu steps straightforward:
- Park on level ground with the doors closed.
- Switch the ignition on without starting the engine — on keyless cars, press the start/stop button twice without touching the pedals; with a key, turn it to the on position.
- Confirm the on-board clock and date are set correctly, because CBS uses them to time date-driven items.
- No tools are needed; the resets are done entirely from the iDrive controller or the cluster stalk button.
How CBS Works
The G20 monitors each service item by condition, not just mileage, and counts how it’s reset. Two rules matter: only reset an item once the work is actually done, and an item only resets if it’s at 90% or less of its life (so you can’t reset a nearly-new service). If both oil and vehicle-check are due, reset engine oil first.
How to Reset a Service Item on the G20
- Close the doors. Turn the ignition on without starting — press the start/stop button twice without touching the pedals (keyless), or turn the key to on.
- Open the service requirements / CBS list — via the iDrive CAR/Vehicle → Vehicle status → Service required menu, or by holding the trip/BC button on the wiper stalk until the service menu appears on the cluster.
- Select the item that’s due (e.g. Engine oil), then choose ‘Reset’ and confirm.
- Repeat for any other completed item. The CBS counter for that item returns to full.
If the Reset Doesn’t Work
CBS is deliberately strict about what it will let you reset, so a “failed” reset is often the system working as intended. Check these points:
- The item must be at 90% or less of its life. A nearly-new item is locked and cannot be reset — wait until it is closer to due.
- Make sure the ignition is on with the engine off; if the engine starts, the service menu can drop away.
- Confirm you selected the correct item and reached the final Reset / confirm step rather than just viewing its status.
- If an item still won’t take, switch the ignition off, wait a few seconds, switch back on and repeat.
If It Won’t Reset
- The item is above 90% life — CBS won’t let you reset an item that isn’t due yet.
- Brakes won’t reset — the brake-wear sensor must be working/connected.
- Make sure the on-board clock is set correctly — CBS uses it.
What Happens Next
When you confirm a reset, that item’s counter returns to a full life and the “service required” entry for it clears. Any items you did not reset carry on counting down unchanged, which is exactly how CBS is meant to behave — each item is independent. The reset affects only the maintenance counters, not your driving data or vehicle settings.
How Often It Comes Up
Reset each CBS item once, whenever you have just completed that item’s work — oil after an oil change, brake fluid after a fluid change, and so on. Because the intervals mix condition monitoring and fixed time, the gap before an item next comes due varies with mileage, driving style and the calendar, so let the CBS list itself flag each item and follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s handbook for the details.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Condition Based Servicing?
BMW’s system that tracks each service item by condition and shows what’s due, so you reset items individually rather than one global service light.
Do I need a diagnostic tool?
No — the resets are done from the iDrive/cluster menu with the ignition on.
Why won’t it let me reset?
An item only resets when it’s at 90% or less of its life; a nearly-new item can’t be reset.
Which order — oil or vehicle check?
Reset engine oil first if both are due.
Can I reset just one item and leave the others?
Yes — that is the point of CBS. Reset only the item you have serviced; the rest keep counting down independently.
The oil service came straight back after resetting — why?
Either the reset wasn’t confirmed to the final step, or a separate warning is present. Repeat the reset for that item and confirm it fully; a genuine fault light won’t clear this way.
