Disconnecting the 12 V battery on an Audi A3 Mk4 (8Y, 2020–present) is a straightforward engine-bay job you can do on the driveway with a single spanner. The usual reasons are renewing a worn-out battery, working safely near live wiring during electrical or bodywork repairs, laying the car up for winter, or recovering the electronics after a flat-battery no-start. Follow the right order — negative off first, positive on first — and the A3 relearns what it needs within a drive or two, with nothing permanently lost.

Where the 12 V Battery Is
The 12 V battery sits in the engine bay, under a cover. Lift or unclip the cover to reach the two posts: the negative (−) earth terminal (black lead) and the positive (+) under a red plastic flap. Mild-hybrid (MHEV) petrol versions still use a conventional 12 V battery in this location — there is no separate high-voltage traction system on the A3 to worry about, so this is an ordinary single-battery job.
First, a Few Checks
- Turn the ignition fully off, take the key/keyless fob out of range, and close the doors so modules stop waking.
- Check that lights, wipers, climate and the MMI are all switched off before touching a terminal.
- Note any radio/security code you have on paper — the MMI normally reloads by itself, but it’s worth having to hand.
- Wait a couple of minutes so the control modules power down and go to sleep.
- Wear gloves and eye protection, and have the correct spanner ready before you loosen anything.
Disconnecting
- Confirm the ignition is off, the fob is away, and wait a minute for the electronics to sleep.
- Loosen and remove the negative (−) terminal first, then tuck the lead aside so it can’t spring back onto the post.
- If you’re removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then undo the clamp and cover and lift the battery clear.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- Refit the battery, cover and clamp, then connect the positive (+) terminal first.
- Connect the negative (−) terminal last and tighten both clamps firmly.
- Switch on, reset the clock, and let the MMI reload on its own.
- Re-initialise the one-touch windows so auto-up/down and anti-pinch work again — see our A3 window guide.
- Stop/start may behave conservatively for a drive or two while the battery monitor relearns — that’s normal.
A like-for-like battery doesn’t strictly need coding, but a different type or capacity should be registered to the battery-management system so the charging strategy matches — that step needs an OBD tool.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off
- Check both terminal clamps are fully tight — a loose earth is the most common cause of odd electrics after a reconnect.
- Take a short drive so the systems can relearn; several minor lights self-clear once the car sees a normal drive cycle.
- If the windows still won’t auto-close, re-do the quick re-initialise — it’s the step most people forget.
- If the car struggles to hold charge, the battery itself may simply be old or flat rather than anything you did.
- Read any stored code before replacing parts — it usually points straight to the cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the 12 V battery on an Audi A3 Mk4?
It’s in the engine bay, under a cover. Unclip the cover to reach the negative (−) and positive (+) posts. Mild-hybrid petrol A3s still use this conventional 12 V battery — there’s no separate high-voltage system to worry about.
Which terminal do I disconnect first on the A3?
The negative (−) terminal comes off first and goes back on last. That order avoids shorting the positive to bodywork while your spanner is on it, which is the safest sequence on any car.
What will I need to reset afterwards?
Mainly the clock and the one-touch/anti-pinch windows. The MMI reloads on its own, and stop/start may run conservatively for a drive while the battery monitor relearns. Seat or mirror memory settings, if fitted, are retained.
Does the Audi A3 battery need coding?
A matching like-for-like replacement generally doesn’t need coding to drive the car. A different type or capacity should be registered to the battery-management system with a diagnostic tool so the charging strategy suits the new battery.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the service light or clear codes?
It may clear some temporary codes, but it won’t properly reset the service reminder — use the correct procedure for that. A genuine fault will simply re-log its code as soon as the car powers back up.
Can I jump-start the A3 instead of disconnecting?
Yes — if the battery is just flat, a jump-start to the terminals will get you going. You only need to disconnect if you’re renewing the battery or working on the electrics, not for an everyday flat-battery recovery.
For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our A3 Mk4 service reset.
