Set the Wiper Service Position

These instructions apply to the Audi A3 Mk4 (8Y) 2020-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

To change the wiper blades or lift them off the glass in winter on an Audi A3 Mk4 (8Y, 2020–present), the wiper arms need to be in their service position — standing up clear of the bonnet edge. If you just switch off, the arms park low under the bonnet lip where you can’t reach them. Here’s how to raise them.

Why You Need the Service Position

The A3’s wipers park tucked below the bonnet trim. Trying to lift them from there risks bending an arm or cracking the trim, so the car has a dedicated mode that moves them upright.

How to Set the Wiper Service Position

  1. Make sure the bonnet is closed (the mode won’t engage with it open).
  2. Switch the ignition on then off — leave the ignition off.
  3. Within about a few seconds of switching off, briefly tap the wiper stalk down (the single-wipe position).
  4. The wipers sweep up and stop in the vertical service position.
  5. Lift the arms away from the glass to change the blades or clear snow.

Some 8Y cars also offer a ‘Service position’ toggle in the MMI under the car/service menu — either method does the same thing.

Returning Them to Park

Fold the arms back onto the glass, then switch the ignition on and operate the wipers once — they return to the normal parked position.

If the Wipers Won’t Lift

  • You missed the time window — the stalk input only works for a few seconds after switching off; try again.
  • The bonnet isn’t fully latched — the mode is blocked with the bonnet open.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I put the Audi A3 wipers in service position?

Switch the ignition off, then within a few seconds tap the wiper stalk down; the arms rise to vertical. Some cars also have an MMI ‘Service position’ option.

Why won’t my wipers move up to be changed?

They park under the bonnet lip on purpose. Use the service-position mode rather than forcing them.

How do I get them back down?

Fold them onto the glass, switch the ignition on and run the wipers once.

Do I need a tool?

No — it’s done with the wiper stalk or the MMI menu.
