When the spanner or a “Service” / “Inspection” message appears on your Audi A3 Mk4 (8Y, 2020–present), a service interval has elapsed. The quickest DIY route is the trip-reset button method. Do the oil and filter change first; the reminder is just a counter.

The fourth-generation A3 (chassis 8Y) displays its maintenance prompt as a spanner symbol, usually with a “Service” or “Inspection” message in the driver information display. This is a reminder, not a fault. The car keeps separate counters for the oil-change service and the periodic inspection, and shows the spanner when whichever is due first counts down to zero. Nothing is wrong with the engine — the display is simply telling you scheduled maintenance is due.
What the Service Message Means
The A3’s reminder is interval-based, tracking distance and time since the last reset. The oil-service side can run on a longer, flexible schedule, while the inspection tends to be a fixed time/distance check. Because both work from counters rather than measuring the oil directly, they can’t detect a fresh oil change — the message stays until you reset it. A steady spanner with “Service” or “Inspection” is the routine prompt; a red engine or oil-pressure symbol is a genuine warning from a different system and won’t clear through a service reset.
Reset Only After the Service
The interval measures distance and time since the last reset. Clearing it early hides the reminder while the oil keeps ageing, so reset it only once the work is done. Before you start:
- Park on level ground with the parking brake applied.
- Have the ignition on and the engine off for the button method.
- No tools are needed for the trip-button route; find the reset (0.0) button on the wiper stalk or cluster first.
- After a full service you may need to clear both the oil and the inspection prompt.
How to Reset Using the Trip Button
- Turn the ignition off.
- Press and hold the reset (0.0) button — the trip-reset on the wiper stalk or instrument cluster.
- While holding it, switch the ignition on.
- A service-reset prompt appears — release the button, then press it again (or the OK/menu button) to confirm.
- If your car tracks oil and inspection separately, repeat for the second prompt.
If the Button Method Doesn’t Offer a Reset
Some 8Y cars only expose the reset through diagnostics. If the trip-button prompt doesn’t appear, the service indicator is reset with a diagnostic (OBD) tool or at a dealer instead. The MMI Vehicle → Service & checks menu shows the remaining intervals even when it can’t reset them — useful for confirming which counter is due before you decide how to clear it.
If the Reminder Returns
If the spanner is still showing, work through these first:
- It reappears at start-up — the confirmation wasn’t completed; repeat and make sure you confirm the prompt.
- Only one counter cleared — after a full service both oil and inspection may need resetting; do the second prompt too.
- Button released too soon — keep it held as you switch the ignition on and wait for the prompt to appear.
- A different warning is on — that’s a fault, not the service timer, and won’t clear this way.
After the Reset
Once the reset registers, the spanner clears and the counter restarts at a full interval. The “Service” message should be gone at the next ignition-on, with no drive cycle to complete and nothing to relearn. If it reappears after a restart, the confirmation didn’t go through, so run the method again — or, on cars that need it, use a diagnostic tool.
How Often You’ll Need This
Reset each counter once, at the point its service is done — oil at the oil change, inspection when the periodic inspection is carried out. The A3’s exact intervals depend on engine, schedule type and how the car is used, so instead of relying on a fixed figure, follow the plan in your own vehicle handbook and reset to match the work completed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the reset button on the Audi A3 8Y?
The trip-reset (0.0) button on the wiper stalk or cluster — the one you use to zero the trip. Hold it while switching the ignition on to bring up the service-reset prompt.
Can I reset the A3 service light without a tool?
Often yes, via the trip-button method. If no reset prompt appears, a diagnostic (OBD) tool or a dealer is needed instead.
Does the engine need to run?
No — the button method wants ignition on, engine off. Don’t start the engine during the sequence.
Why are there two messages (oil and inspection)?
Audi tracks oil-change and inspection intervals separately. Reset whichever the display prompts; do both after a full service.
Where can I see the remaining service interval?
In the MMI, open Vehicle → Service & checks. It shows the distance and time left to each service even on cars that need a tool to reset.
Does resetting mean the service is done?
No. The reset only clears the reminder — the oil, filter or inspection work is the actual service. Do the work first, then reset.
