Reinitialise the Electric Windows

If the one-touch (auto up/down) windows stop working on your Citroën Berlingo Mk3 (K9, 2018–present) — usually after a flat or disconnected battery — the window motor has lost its learned end-stops and anti-pinch reference. Re-teaching it takes seconds per door, no tools. This is a normal side-effect of losing 12 V power, not a fault with the switch or motor, and nothing needs replacing.

Why It Happens

The window controller remembers the fully-closed position so one-touch can stop correctly and the anti-pinch can work. A power interruption clears that memory, leaving only hold-to-move operation.

How the Window System Works on the Berlingo

Each front door has its own control module that stores the exact top and bottom positions of the glass. Those stored limits are what let the window run on its own with a single tap and what let the anti-pinch reverse the glass if it meets resistance near the top. When the 12 V supply is interrupted — a flat battery, a disconnection for service, or a blown fuse — the module still drives the motor but no longer knows the limits, so it will only move the glass while you hold the switch. Re-teaching writes the limits back and the automatic functions return.

Before You Start

  • Turn the ignition on so the windows have full power for the learn.
  • Keep the door closed the whole time so the glass seats at its true closed stop.
  • Confirm the 12 V battery is healthy — a weak battery can abort the learn part-way.
  • Clear the run channel of ice, grit or a lifted seal so the glass reaches the top cleanly.
  • Work on one window at a time from that door’s own switch.

How to Re-initialise a Window

  1. Sit in the car with the door closed and the ignition on.
  2. Pull the switch up to fully close the window and keep holding for a couple of seconds after it stops.
  3. Release, then press the switch down to fully open and hold a moment at the bottom.
  4. Pull up again to fully close and hold for a couple of seconds at the top.
  5. Release and test one-touch up and down — it should now run on its own.

Repeat for each affected window using its own switch.

If One-Touch Still Doesn’t Work

  • Hold a little longer at the fully-closed stop — the controller needs to register the top limit before you release.
  • Make sure the door is shut and the battery is healthy during the learn.
  • Check the window fuse if a door is completely dead — the motor needs power for the learn to complete.
  • Run the cycle slowly; letting go the instant the glass stops is the usual reason the limit doesn’t take.
  • If the other doors relearned but one still won’t auto, that door’s regulator or switch may be worn.
  • After a deeply flat battery, do the driver’s window first, then the rest.

What to Expect After

Once the limit is stored, a single tap sends the window fully up or down on its own and the anti-pinch reverse works again near the top. The setting holds until the next power loss, so you should only need to repeat this after another battery disconnect or fuse change — it is not routine maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Berlingo windows stop going up automatically?

A battery disconnect or flat battery wiped the learned position, so the glass now only moves while you hold the switch. Re-initialise by holding the switch fully up, then fully down, then up again to restore one-touch and anti-pinch. It is a normal after-effect of losing power, not a fault.

How do I reset the auto window on a Citroën Berlingo?

Hold the switch up to fully close and keep holding a couple of seconds; if needed, fully open and fully close again, holding at the top. Do it with the door shut and the ignition on, one window at a time from its own switch, then test one-touch.

Do I have to do every window?

Only the ones with one-touch, and only those that actually lost it. Re-teach each affected door from its own switch. Any window that still runs automatically kept its memory and can be left alone.

Do I need a tool?

No — it’s done entirely from the window switches with the ignition on. There is no menu or scan tool involved; the whole procedure is hold-up, hold-down, hold-up on each affected door.

Does the Berlingo Van have the same procedure?

Yes, where the van shares the same electric front windows, the relearn is identical: hold fully up, fully down, then up again with the door shut. Lower-spec vans may have hold-to-move windows with no one-touch at all, in which case there is nothing to re-teach.

Could a blown fuse be the real problem?

Yes. If a window is completely dead rather than just missing one-touch, check the relevant fuse before re-teaching, as the learn can’t finish without power to the motor. If the fuse is sound and the glass still won’t move, a switch or regulator fault may be stored — look up any code on autodtcs.com.
