Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Mazda CX-30 (DM, 2019–present) is a straightforward engine-bay job on the Skyactiv petrol and diesel cars. Owners usually do it to fit a new battery, to isolate the electrics before wiring or bodywork, to lay the car up for a long spell, or to recover after a jump-start. Done in the right order the CX-30 relearns cleanly — though it does need a couple of systems re-initialising once power is back. Where the 12 V Battery Is
The 12 V battery sits in the engine bay, under a cover. The Skyactiv-G petrol and Skyactiv-D diesel CX-30 has no high-voltage system to worry about, so this is a normal owner-level task. Release the cover and you will see two terminals: the negative (−), marked black with a minus symbol, and the positive (+), marked red and usually under a hinged plastic flap. Identify both before you touch a spanner — the order you work in is what keeps the job safe.
Before You Begin
- Make sure the ignition is fully off and the car is not in accessory mode; take the key well away from the vehicle.
- Switch off the lights, climate, Mazda Connect and any accessory drawing power, and shut the doors so nothing keeps a circuit live.
- Mazda Connect reloads without a security code, but note any radio presets you want back exactly.
- Wait a couple of minutes after switching off so the modules power down before you disconnect.
- Have the correct spanner (usually 10 mm) ready, and wear gloves and eye protection in case a tool sparks on a terminal.
Disconnecting
- Switch the ignition off, remove the key and wait a minute for the electronics to sleep.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first. Loosen the clamp, ease it off the post and tuck the lead aside so it cannot flick back onto the terminal.
- If you are removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then undo the hold-down clamp and lift the battery out, keeping it level.
Reconnecting & Re-teaching
- If the battery came out, set it back in place and secure the hold-down clamp first.
- Reconnect the positive (+) first, then the negative (−) last, and tighten both clamps so neither can rock on its post.
- Turn the ignition on and reset the clock; Mazda Connect reloads on its own.

A like-for-like battery doesn’t need coding on the CX-30. Any lights that flag straight after reconnection usually clear once the car has been driven a short distance.
What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards
Losing power clears a few short-term settings, not anything permanent. On the CX-30 expect to sort out:
- The clock and any radio presets; Mazda Connect otherwise reloads on its own.
- The one-touch/anti-pinch windows, which lose their learned end-stops until re-initialised (guide linked above).
- i-stop, which stays lazy while the battery monitor relearns the state of charge over a few drives.
- The occasional warning lamp that lights transiently and self-clears after a short drive.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off
- Check both clamps are genuinely tight — a loose earth is the usual reason for odd behaviour after reconnecting.
- Give the car a gentle 10–15 minute drive with a few stops so the systems can relearn before assuming a fault.
- Re-run the window re-initialise if auto-close still won’t work.
- If starting is weak or lights flicker, rule out a tired or flat battery before chasing electronics.
