If the one-touch (auto up/down) windows stop working on your BMW X1 (F48, 2015–2022) — usually after the battery was disconnected or went flat — the window motor has lost its learned end-stops and anti-trap reference. Re-teaching it takes seconds per door, no tools. This is expected behaviour rather than a breakdown: the glass still raises and lowers while you hold the switch, but it will not run to the top on its own or reverse on an obstruction until the controller has seen the full-closed and full-open positions again.
Why It Happens
The window controller remembers the fully-closed position so one-touch can stop correctly and the anti-trap can work. A power interruption clears that memory, leaving only hold-to-move operation.
How It Works on Your X1
Each auto window on the F48 has a module that watches the motor turn and counts its position, so it always knows where the glass is. That position count is what lets a quick tap run the window to the seal and stop it there, and it is also the reference the anti-trap uses to sense resistance and reverse. When the 12 V supply is cut — a service disconnect, a flat battery, or a pulled fuse — the count is wiped. The window drops to a limp-along mode where it only moves while held, and the automatic and safety functions stay off until you drive it fully closed and fully open so the module re-references both ends.
First, a Few Checks
- Sit in the car with the door closed so the glass seats fully in the frame.
- Switch the ignition on to keep the window powered throughout the learn.
- Check the battery is in good shape — a weak or charging battery can drop out mid-sequence.
- Do one window at a time from its own switch and keep hands clear of the glass.
- Make sure the glass slides smoothly; clear any grit from the rubber channel first.
How to Re-initialise a Window
- Sit in the car with the door closed and the ignition on.
- Pull the switch up to fully close the window and keep holding for a few seconds after it stops.
- Release, then push the switch down to fully open and hold a moment at the bottom.
- Pull up again to fully close and hold for a few seconds at the top.
- Release and test one-touch up and down — it should now run on its own.
Repeat for each affected window using its own switch.
If One-Touch Still Doesn’t Work
- Hold a little longer at the fully-closed stop — the controller needs to register the top limit.
- Make sure the door is shut and the battery is healthy during the learn.
- Hold past each end in both directions — releasing early cancels the relearn before it saves.
- Give a just-reconnected battery a minute to settle, then run the sequence again.
- Clear the run channel — a sticky or dry seal can stall the glass short of the true stop.

Once It’s Done
Once the relearn takes, a single tap of the switch runs the window all the way up or down on its own, it stops neatly at the seal, and the anti-trap reversal is active again. The learned positions are stored permanently, so they survive normal driving and locking — you would only repeat this after the next battery disconnect or flat.

Anti-trap uses the same learned position data, so while the memory is cleared it cannot sense the glass reaching an object. Completing the up-then-down-then-up relearn restores the automatic stop and the anti-trap reversal together, which is why finishing the sequence matters.
Could a fuse be the problem instead?
If a window is completely dead — no movement even while you hold the switch — suspect a fuse or the switch rather than lost initialisation. Lost memory still lets you raise and lower the glass by holding; it only removes one-touch and anti-trap, not all movement.
