Last updated:
Unlike older rear-drive BMWs, the BMW X1 (F48, 2015–2022) keeps its 12 V battery in the cabin, not the boot or engine bay. Knowing where it is saves a lot of hunting — here’s the safe way to disconnect it.
Where the Battery Is
The 12 V battery sits under the rear seat (right-hand side). Lift out the rear seat base to reach it. There is a remote jump-start positive terminal under the bonnet for jump-starting, but the battery itself is under the seat. (On the plug-in hybrid X1, keep clear of the orange high-voltage components.)
Disconnecting
- Switch the ignition off, take the key away and wait a minute.
- Lift out the rear seat base to expose the battery.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first and tuck the lead aside.
- If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then the clamp/vent.
Reconnecting & After
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last; refit the seat base.
- Reset the clock — CBS needs it correct.
- Re-initialise the windows and, if fitted, the sunroof — see our X1 window guide.
- A new battery should be registered to the car with a diagnostic tool so the charging system matches it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a BMW X1 F48?
Under the rear seat, right-hand side — not in the boot or engine bay.
Can I jump-start it from under the bonnet?
Yes — use the marked jump-start positive terminal under the bonnet and an earth point.
Does a new X1 battery need coding?
Yes — a new battery should be registered with a tool; a quick disconnect/reconnect of the same battery doesn’t.
Why disconnect negative first?
It removes the earth path so a tool touching bodywork can’t short the battery.
For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our X1 F48 service reset.
