After adjusting pressures or changing a wheel on your Volkswagen Up (2011–2023), you re-calibrate the tyre-pressure monitor so it relearns the correct baseline. There are two ways depending on your spec — both are tool-free, and both are a routine step rather than a sign that anything has gone wrong. Here’s how.
How the System Works
The Up uses an indirect monitor: rather than sensors inside the wheels, it watches the wheel-speed signals from the ABS. A tyre losing air rolls on a slightly smaller radius and spins a touch faster than the others, and the system reads that difference as a low tyre. Because it compares wheels against a stored reference instead of reading an actual psi value, it has to be told what ‘correct’ looks like — which is why you set the pressures first and then calibrate. Whatever is in the tyres at the moment you calibrate becomes the new baseline.
Set the Pressures First
Inflate all four tyres cold to the figures on the door-pillar / fuel-flap label, then calibrate — the system takes whatever is in the tyres at reset time as ‘correct’.
Getting Ready
- Check and set the tyres cold so the baseline isn’t skewed by warm-up.
- Use the door-pillar / fuel-flap figures, and match the higher laden pressures if the car is loaded.
- Never calibrate with a tyre you know is soft — you’d lock a low pressure in as the reference.
- Have the ignition on for either method; the SET-button method also wants the handbrake engaged.
- Check which system you have — models with the CAR/infotainment menu use Method 1; others use the console SET button.
Method 1 — Infotainment
- Switch the ignition on.
- Press the ‘CAR’ button on the radio/infotainment.
- Select ‘SETUP’ → ‘TYRES’ → ‘SET’, then ‘CONFIRM’.
Method 2 — Console SET Button
- Switch the ignition on with the handbrake engaged.
- At the centre console, press and hold the ‘SET’ button.
- Wait for the confirmation beep, then release.
If the Light Stays On
- Recheck every tyre — one low corner triggers it.
- Always calibrate after inflating or a wheel swap so the baseline matches the new pressures.
- A genuine slow puncture keeps the warning on — inspect for a nail or leaking valve before resetting.
- Check the spare if a full-size wheel has been rotated into use at the wrong pressure.
- Cold weather can drop every tyre a few psi overnight; top up cold and re-calibrate.
- Confirm the calibration took — wait for the on-screen confirmation or the beep before driving off.
What Happens Next
Once you’ve calibrated, the warning clears and the monitor judges every tyre against the baseline you just set, so it should only light again if a tyre genuinely goes soft. Re-run the calibration whenever you deliberately change the pressures — for a heavy load, or when swapping between summer and winter tyres — so the reference always matches what is actually in the tyres.

How do I reset the tyre pressure light on a VW Up?

Is a tool needed?
No — the Up’s system re-calibrates itself from a menu or a button, with no sensors in the wheels to program. Because it is indirect there is nothing to match with a TPMS tool; setting the pressures and confirming the calibration is the entire job.
Why did it light up in cold weather?
Cold air lowers pressure, so an overnight temperature drop can be enough to trip the warning even with healthy tyres. Top each tyre back up to the label figure while cold and re-calibrate; the light should stay off unless a tyre is actually losing air.
It lit after a wheel change — normal?
Yes — calibrate so the new wheel becomes the reference. Fitting a different wheel changes its rolling behaviour, which the indirect system reads as a difference until you re-set the baseline. Set all four to spec and run whichever method your car has.
Which method does my Up use?
It depends on spec. Cars with the infotainment/CAR menu use Method 1; simpler models have a physical SET button on the centre console for Method 2. If one route isn’t present on your car, use the other — both do the same calibration.
Does it tell me which tyre is low?
No — being indirect, it only warns that a tyre is low, not which one or by how much. That is why the fix is to check all four pressures cold with a gauge, correct any that are down, and then re-calibrate so the baseline is clean.
