Changing the engine oil and filter on your Jeep Renegade (2014–present) is well within reach for a home mechanic with a socket set, a jack and axle stands — and it’s the single most valuable service you can do yourself. The procedure below is the same in principle across the BU Renegade range, but the oil capacity and grade are specific to your engine, so read the capacity note carefully.

Get Your Engine’s Figures First

The Renegade has been sold with several engines (1.0/1.3/1.5 petrol, 1.6/2.0 MultiJet diesel, and the 4xe), and each takes a different oil quantity and a different oil specification. Don’t fill by a generic number — get the right figures for your engine from:

• the owner’s handbook (capacities & lubricants section), or
• the oil filler cap / under-bonnet label, which usually states the approved spec.

Always finish by checking the dipstick and topping up to the mark rather than trusting the bottle — that’s how you avoid over- or under-filling regardless of engine.

Changing the Oil and Filter

1. Warm the engine for a few minutes so the oil drains freely, then switch off. Caution: the oil will be hot. Wear gloves and eye protection.
2. Park level. Manual: select neutral. Automatic: select ‘P’. Raise the front on the jacking points and support it on axle stands — never work under a car held only by a jack.
3. Open the oil filler cap and pull the dipstick to help it drain.
4. Remove the engine lower cover, position a drain tray, and remove the sump drain plug. Let it drain fully.
5. Renew the oil filter (cartridge or spin-on depending on engine), lightly oiling the new seal first.
6. Refit the drain plug with a new sealing washer and tighten to the specified torque (don’t overtighten into the alloy sump).
7. Refill with the correct grade and quantity for your engine, then check the level on the dipstick and top up to the mark.
8. Run the engine, check for leaks at the plug and filter, recheck the level, and reset the service indicator.

Tips and Troubleshooting

• Always renew the drain-plug washer — reusing it is the usual cause of a weeping plug.
• Don’t overfill. Too much oil is as harmful as too little; fill to the dipstick mark, not above.
• Dispose of the old oil and filter responsibly at a recycling centre — never down a drain.
