When the oil-service reminder appears on your Jaguar F-Pace (2016–present), you can reset the service counter yourself with a pedal sequence — no dealer for the routine oil reset. The message is a maintenance prompt, not a warning of a fault: the car’s service counter has reached the distance or time it was set to run between services, and it needs zeroing once fresh oil is in. Here’s the owner method for the X761 F-Pace, along with what the reminder means and how to make the reset stick.

What the Service Reminder Means on the F-Pace

The F-Pace tracks servicing with a counter that measures distance driven and elapsed time. When either limit is reached, the instrument cluster shows an oil-service or spanner reminder to tell you a service is due. It is not linked to oil pressure, coolant temperature or any mechanical fault — those trigger their own dedicated warning lights. The reminder is simply the car’s way of keeping you on schedule.

Because the counter only measures distance and time, it cannot tell whether new oil has actually gone in. Resetting it is therefore a deliberate manual step you carry out once the work is done. For the precise service interval that applies to your F-Pace — which varies by engine, market and driving pattern — follow the schedule in your owner’s handbook rather than relying on a fixed number.

First, a Few Checks

This resets the service/oil counter after an oil change. The car must be stationary, and you don’t start the engine during the sequence.

What the service (spanner) light means on the Jaguar F-Pace Mk1, and that a reset clears it after a service.

A few points to have in place before you begin:

  • Carry out the oil and filter change first — the reset only clears the reminder, it does not service the car.
  • Park on level ground, apply the parking brake and leave the transmission in P.
  • You’ll need the ignition on with the engine off, plus access to open the bonnet and the driver’s door.
  • No tools or diagnostic equipment are required — just the pedals and ignition.

Resetting the Service Indicator

  1. Switch the ignition on (don’t start the engine).
  2. Open the bonnet and open the driver’s door.
  3. Fully depress both the accelerator and brake pedals together and hold for about 10 seconds.
  4. ‘SERVICE MODE RESET’ appears on the display.
  5. Switch the ignition off, then on, and check the service indicator has gone out. Repeat if needed.

If the Reminder Won’t Clear

If the message is still showing after your first attempt, the reset usually just didn’t register. Work through these before trying anything else:

  • Hold both pedals fully for the full 10 seconds with the bonnet and driver’s door open — the car only accepts the reset in that state.
  • Press both pedals right to the floor together; a half-pressed pedal may not be recognised.
  • Keep the engine off throughout — the ignition should be on but the engine must not be running.
  • Cycle the ignition off and on afterwards to confirm the indicator has cleared, then repeat the whole sequence if it hasn’t.
  • A separate warning light? A fault stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Once the Reset Is Done

Once ‘SERVICE MODE RESET’ has shown and you cycle the ignition, the oil-service reminder should disappear and stay off. Start the engine and check the cluster once more to be sure the message doesn’t reappear. The service counter now begins a fresh countdown, so the reminder won’t return until the next service is due.

Reset Frequency

Only reset the F-Pace service indicator after a genuine oil-and-filter service — that is the single occasion it should be cleared. Jaguar’s maintenance schedule sets the distance or time between services, and it differs by engine and driving conditions, so check your owner’s handbook for the interval that applies to your car rather than assuming a figure. Clearing the reminder for any other reason just removes a useful prompt.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on a Jaguar F-Pace?

Ignition on, bonnet and driver’s door open, press the accelerator and brake together for 10 seconds until ‘SERVICE MODE RESET’ shows, then cycle the ignition.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No — the pedal method is the owner reset for the service counter.

Why must the bonnet and door be open?

The car only accepts the reset with the bonnet and driver’s door open and the ignition on.

The light came back — why?

The reset probably didn’t register; repeat it, holding both pedals fully for the 10 seconds.

Does resetting the reminder count as a service?

No. The reset only zeroes the counter. Always change the oil and filter first; clearing the message is not evidence that any work was done.

Can I reset it with the engine running?

No — the ignition should be on but the engine off throughout the pedal sequence. Start the engine only afterwards to confirm the reminder has cleared.
