Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Jaguar F-Pace Mk1 (X761) 2016-Present.

If the central touchscreen in your Jaguar F-Pace (X761, 2016–Present) has frozen, gone black, locked on the Jaguar logo, or stopped responding to touch while audio carries on playing, you can force a clean restart yourself from the driver’s seat — no tools, no dealer trip.

How to force a soft reset of the Jaguar F-Pace Mk1 infotainment screen without losing your saved settings.

Which system is in your F-Pace

The X761 shipped with two generations of Jaguar infotainment, and they reboot slightly differently:

  • InControl Touch Pro on 2016–2020 cars — the 10-inch screen with the spinning-globe boot animation. This is the well-documented freeze-prone era; Jaguar issued multiple software phases (up to Phase 4.0) to calm random crashes.
  • Pivi Pro on the 2021 facelift onward — the curved 11.4-inch glass display. It is far more stable, boots in seconds, and updates over the air, so freezes are rare.

Both are rebooted by holding the physical control, never by tapping the screen.

Soft reset (reboot) the screen

Do this parked, with the ignition on so the head unit keeps power.

  1. Find the round volume/on-off knob below the centre of the screen.
  2. Press and hold it — keep holding straight through the audio mute.
  3. After about 20–30 seconds the screen goes black. Keep holding until the Jaguar leaping-cat logo reappears, then release.
  4. Wait 30–60 seconds for the home screen to reload. Touch, audio and navigation should all respond again.

This is the same idea as restarting a phone — a stuck process is cleared and the display unit reloads.

Will this erase anything? No

The knob-hold reboot is completely safe. It does not delete radio presets, navigation favourites, paired phones, your InControl profile, or any settings. The screen simply powers down and reloads. Repeat as often as you need.

If the screen stays frozen

  • Hold longer. If one cycle doesn’t take on a Touch Pro car, keep the knob pressed until the logo has come and gone twice before releasing.
  • Let it sleep fully. Switch off, lock with the fob, and walk away for at least 5–7 minutes so the electronics power down completely, then unlock and restart.
  • Suspect a paired phone. On Touch Pro F-Paces a faulty Bluetooth or CarPlay pairing is a known cause of lock-ups — delete the device and re-pair, or test with the phone disconnected.
  • Update the software. Touch Pro cars benefit hugely from the latest dealer-flashed phase; Pivi Pro updates over the air. An up-to-date system is the real fix for chronic freezing.

Factory reset (erases data)

On InControl Touch Pro there is no owner-accessible factory reset — the full vehicle-data wipe (added in software IMC S20A) can only be run by a dealer with Pathfinder/TOPIx. On Pivi Pro you can erase data yourself: go to Settings → All settings and use the profile/reset options, then remove the car from your account at the My InControl website. A factory reset clears presets, pairings and personal data, so only do it when selling the car.

Frequently Asked Questions

My 2018 F-Pace screen freezes randomly — is that normal?

It was a known InControl Touch Pro weakness on early X761 cars, which is why Jaguar shipped successive software phases. The knob-hold reboot clears each lock-up; getting the car onto the latest Touch Pro software at a dealer dramatically reduces how often it happens.

Will I lose my settings if I reboot the F-Pace?

No. The volume-knob restart keeps every preset, favourite, profile and paired phone. Only a deliberate factory reset clears them.

How do I tell Touch Pro from Pivi Pro in my F-Pace?

Touch Pro (2016–2020) has a separate screen with a spinning-globe start-up; Pivi Pro (2021 on) has a wide curved glass display and boots almost instantly. The reboot knob-hold is the same on both.

Can I keep driving with the F-Pace screen frozen?

Yes. The infotainment is independent of the drivetrain — you only lose audio and navigation. Reboot when safely parked.

The screen is black but the audio still plays — what is wrong?

That is a classic display lock-up where the software has hung but the audio process survives. The knob-hold reboot almost always brings the picture back.

If a warning light or message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have stored a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
