Put the Wipers in Service Position

To change the wiper blades or lift them off the screen in winter on your Jaguar F-Pace (2016–present), you first need to put the wipers into their service position — at rest they park below the bonnet line where you can’t reach them. It’s a quick stalk sequence, no tools. This is sometimes called the maintenance or winter position, and it is a normal built-in feature rather than a fault or a warning.

Why There’s a Service Position

When the F-Pace switches off, its wiper arms settle to a low park beneath the trailing edge of the bonnet and the scuttle trim. That’s ideal on the move — out of the driver’s view and sheltered from the airflow — but it leaves little room to work. Lift an arm straight up from that parked spot and the tip fouls the bonnet lip, so it’s easy to bend the arm, chip the paint, or crack the glass if the arm springs back onto it.

The service position walks the arms up to a near-vertical stance in the clear middle of the screen, away from the surround, so they fold forward on their hinges and you have space to change or clean the blades. In frost it also lets you stand the arms off the glass so the rubber doesn’t freeze flat overnight and tear on the first wipe.

Before You Start

• Make sure the bonnet is closed — the F-Pace blocks the service position while the bonnet is raised.
• Let the wipers finish and settle at their rest position before you begin the sequence.
• If the blades are iced to the glass, free them gently first so the motor doesn’t stall against them.
• Have the new blades unpacked and ready so an arm never sits sprung-up for long.
• Work one arm at a time and support a bare arm so it can’t drop back onto the screen.

Setting the Service Position

1. Make sure the wipers are at their rest position and the bonnet is closed.
2. Turn the ignition off, then turn the ignition ON and OFF again.
3. Push the wiper stalk down and hold it, then turn the ignition on.
4. The wipers move up to the service position — you can now lift the arms off the glass to change or clean the blades.

The order is the key: the car looks for the stalk held down at the instant the ignition comes on. Turn the ignition on first and then move the stalk, and it reads as a normal wipe instead of the service command.

Returning the Wipers to Normal

Fold each arm back down flat onto the screen first, then turn the ignition off — the wipers return to their normal parked position below the bonnet line. Don’t force the arms back into park by hand against the motor, as that can strain the linkage or throw off where they settle.

If It Doesn’t Work

• Bonnet open. The service position is inhibited with the bonnet up — close it fully and retry.
• Wrong order. Hold the stalk down before and as you turn the ignition on, not afterwards.
• Wipers weren’t parked. Let them finish their sweep and settle at rest before starting the ignition cycle.
• Blades frozen down. Iced-on blades can stall the motor; free them from the glass first.
• Ignition cycle skipped. Do the off, then on-and-off again, before the hold-and-on step — don’t shortcut it.
• Still nothing? Switch fully off and run the whole sequence again cleanly from the start.

Changing the Blades

With an arm raised, hold it so it can’t spring back and strike the glass — a bare arm dropping onto a cold screen can chip or crack it. F-Pace blades usually use a clip or hook fitting where the blade meets the arm: release the catch, slide the old blade off, and press the new one on until it locks with a click. Check it’s seated before moving on, and lower each arm gently onto the glass once both are done rather than letting it snap down.
