Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Ford Kuga Mk3 (CX482) 2020-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

If the touchscreen in your Ford Kuga (Mk3, CX482, 2020–Present) has frozen, gone black, or stopped responding to taps, you can force the SYNC unit to reboot yourself in under a minute — no tools, no dealer trip.

Which SYNC system the Mk3 Kuga uses

The third-generation Kuga (CX482, also the Escape in some markets) runs SYNC 3 on an 8-inch touchscreen, paired with a 12.3-inch digital cluster on higher trims. It is touch-operated with a few hard buttons below; there is no rotary controller. A frozen Kuga screen is almost always a software lock-up in the APIM module behind the dash — the engine, climate and driving systems keep working while only the display sticks. The reboot is triggered with the Seek-forward button and the Power/Volume knob.

Soft reset (reboot) the SYNC 3 screen

Park the Kuga with the engine running or ignition on so the system stays powered.

  1. Find the Power/Volume knob (press-in centre is power/mute) and the Seek-forward button (the >> double-arrow) on the centre stack.
  2. Press and hold both at the same time.
  3. Keep holding for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Ford oval appears.
  4. Release both buttons; press Power once if the screen does not switch back on by itself.
  5. Allow 30–60 seconds for the home screen to reload before expecting touch and audio to respond.

Safe — it loses no data

This reboot is harmless: it does not delete radio presets, paired phones, call history or navigation favourites. The unit simply reloads its software, like restarting a phone. Repeat as needed.

If it stays frozen

  • Hold longer. If 10 seconds did nothing, retry and hold both buttons for a full 20–30 seconds.
  • Cycle the ignition fully. Switch the car off, open the driver’s door, lock it, and walk away for a few minutes so the module powers down; then unlock and restart — Ford’s recommended key cycle for a current Kuga.
  • Suspect CarPlay. If freezes coincide with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, unplug the phone, delete the pairing on both devices, swap to a known-good USB cable, and re-pair.
  • Update SYNC. Recurring Mk3 Kuga freezes are addressed by Ford software. Check for a free update on the Ford owner site, download it to a USB stick and install it in the car — SYNC 3 updates are USB-only now.

Master reset (erases data — rarely needed)

A master reset is separate from the reboot and only worth doing if you are selling the Kuga or chasing a stubborn glitch. On the touchscreen go to Settings → General → Master Reset and confirm. It wipes paired phones, call history, presets, navigation favourites and all personal settings back to factory defaults, so do it on purpose. Note that on the Mk3 the screen can sit black for a couple of minutes while it rebuilds after a master reset — let it finish before assuming it has failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will rebooting my Mk3 Kuga lose my presets and paired phone?

No. The Seek-plus-Power restart keeps every preset, favourite and pairing. Only the Master Reset in Settings clears them.

My Kuga screen stayed black after a master reset — did I break it?

Probably not. The Mk3 can take one to two minutes to rebuild its interface after a master reset. Leave the ignition on and wait; if it is still black after several minutes, do the Seek-plus-Power reboot, then a full key cycle.

Is there a known freezing fault on the Mk3 Kuga?

Some owners report SYNC 3 freezes that Ford has addressed with software. Install the latest version via USB; a unit that still freezes constantly afterwards is worth a dealer check.

Is it safe to drive with the screen frozen?

Yes. The SYNC unit is independent of the engine and brakes — you only lose audio, phone and navigation. Reboot when safely parked.

How do I update SYNC 3 on the Kuga?

Sign in on the Ford owner site with your VIN, check for a newer version, download it to a blank USB stick and plug it into the media USB port with the engine running. Follow the prompts and do not switch off until it finishes.

If a warning light or fault message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have stored a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
