Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Jaguar XE Mk1 (X760) 2015-Present.

If the touchscreen in your Jaguar XE (X760, 2015–Present) has frozen, dropped to a black screen, stuck on the leaping-cat logo, or stopped taking touch input while music keeps playing, you can force a full restart yourself in under a minute — parked, with no tools and no garage visit.

How to force a soft reset of the Jaguar XE Mk1 infotainment screen without losing your saved settings.

Which system is in your XE

The X760 XE used Jaguar’s pre-Pivi infotainment for its whole UK run:

  • InControl Touch on early base cars — the simpler 8-inch system.
  • InControl Touch Pro on most XEs — the 10-inch screen with the spinning-globe boot animation. This was the freeze-prone generation, and Jaguar released a string of software updates to settle random crashes affecting DAB radio, navigation and CarPlay.

Both reboot the same way — by holding the physical knob, not by touching the screen.

Soft reset (reboot) the screen

Do this parked, ignition on so the system keeps power.

  1. Find the round volume/on-off knob below the centre of the screen.
  2. Press and hold it — keep holding straight past the audio mute.
  3. After roughly 20–30 seconds the screen goes black. Hold until the Jaguar logo reappears, then release.
  4. Wait 30–60 seconds for the home screen to reload. Touch, audio and navigation should respond again.

It is the equivalent of restarting a phone — a hung process is cleared and the display reloads.

Will this erase anything? No

The knob-hold reboot is safe. It does not delete radio presets, navigation favourites, paired phones, your InControl profile or any settings. The screen just powers down and reloads. Repeat as often as needed.

If the screen stays frozen

  • Hold longer. If one cycle doesn’t take, keep the knob pressed until the logo has come and gone twice before releasing.
  • Re-seat the navigation SD card. XE owners have reported that removing the navigation flash card from the centre-armrest slot and reinserting it reboots the whole InControl system and clears the freeze.
  • Let it sleep fully. Switch off, lock with the fob and walk away for at least 7 minutes so the electronics shut down completely, then unlock and restart.
  • Update the software. Touch Pro XEs benefit greatly from the latest dealer-flashed software, which Jaguar issued specifically to cure random crashing. This is the real long-term fix.

Factory reset (erases data)

The XE’s InControl Touch Pro has no owner-accessible factory reset. The full vehicle-data wipe (introduced with software IMC S20A) can only be performed at a dealer using Pathfinder/TOPIx. When selling the car, also log in to the My InControl website and remove the vehicle from your account. Because a factory reset erases presets, pairings and personal data, it is a deliberate selling-the-car step, not a freeze fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

My XE InControl Touch Pro keeps crashing — is that a known fault?

Yes. Random crashing of DAB, navigation and CarPlay was a documented Touch Pro issue on the X760, which is why Jaguar released multiple software updates. The knob-hold reboot recovers each crash; getting the latest software flashed at a dealer is the lasting fix.

Will I lose my presets if I reboot the XE?

No. The volume-knob restart keeps every preset, favourite, profile and paired phone. Only a deliberate dealer factory reset clears them.

Does pulling the SD card really help?

On the XE it can. The navigation card lives in the centre armrest; removing and reinserting it forces the InControl system to reboot, which several owners have used to clear a stubborn freeze.

Can I keep driving with the XE screen frozen?

Yes. The infotainment is independent of the engine and brakes — you only lose audio and navigation. Reboot when safely parked.

The audio plays but the screen is black — what is happening?

That is a display lock-up where the software has hung but the audio process is still alive. The knob-hold reboot almost always restores the picture.

If a warning light or message stays on the dash after the reboot, the car may have logged a diagnostic trouble code — you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
