Reset a Frozen Infotainment Screen

These instructions apply to the Jeep Renegade Mk1 (BU) 2014-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

On the Jeep Renegade (BU, 2014–Present) a frozen Uconnect touchscreen — logo stuck, black display, or taps that do nothing — almost always clears with a simple knob reboot you can do from the driver’s seat. No tools, no battery disconnect, and on the soft reboot you lose no paired phones, presets, or settings.

Which Uconnect is in your Renegade

The Renegade has run several Uconnect generations across its long life, and the reset combo depends on which one you have:

  • Uconnect 5.0 / 6.5 (early 2015–2018, 5.0in or 6.5in screen) — physical volume knob on the left, tuner knob on the right. Reboots with the two-knob hold.
  • Uconnect 4 (7.0in, roughly 2019–2022 facelift) — still has both rotary knobs; same two-knob hold.
  • Uconnect 5 (8.4in, latest facelift cars) — capacitive panel; reboot uses the on-screen / hard volume buttons held together rather than the tuner knob.

If your Renegade has two real rotary knobs flanking the screen, use the knob method. If it has a slim glass panel with no tuner knob, use the volume-button method described lower down.

Soft reset (knob Uconnect — keeps all your data)

  1. Put the Renegade in Park and turn the ignition to RUN (engine running is fine; press Start without the brake to reach RUN on keyless cars).
  2. Press and hold the volume knob (left) and the tuner/scroll knob (right) at the same time.
  3. Keep both pressed for 10 to 20 seconds. Do not let go early.
  4. The screen goes dark and the Jeep logo reappears. Release the knobs.
  5. Wait about 30–60 seconds for the system to finish booting before you touch it.

Soft reset (glass Uconnect 5 — keeps all your data)

  1. With the car in Park and ignition in RUN, press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for about 12–15 seconds.
  2. Release when the display shows “Restarting…” or goes black, then let it reboot.

This is safe — no data loss

The knob/volume reboot is exactly the soft reset Jeep technicians use. It restarts the head unit software only. Your Bluetooth pairings, phone book, radio presets, navigation favourites and display settings are all kept. Nothing is erased.

If it stays frozen

  • Try the hold once more and count a full 20 seconds — people often release too soon.
  • Turn the Renegade fully off, open the driver’s door, wait 2–3 minutes for the system to sleep, then restart.
  • Check for a pending Uconnect software update — a stalled over-the-air update can cause repeat freezes.
  • Still dead? Pull the radio fuse for 30 seconds (see your owner’s manual fuse chart) or disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15 minutes as a last-resort power-cycle.

Factory reset (erases your data)

Only use this if a soft reboot won’t hold. A factory reset wipes pairings, presets and personal settings.

  • Glass Uconnect 5: tap More / Settings → Reset → Restore Factory Defaults on the touchscreen, then confirm.
  • Older knob units (Uconnect 8.4-style menu): press and hold the temperature Up and Down buttons together for about 5 seconds until a service menu appears, then choose Reset to Factory Settings and wait ~30 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the knob reset delete my Bluetooth pairings on the Renegade?

No. The two-knob soft reboot only restarts the software. Paired phones, contacts and presets stay intact. Only a factory reset removes them.

My Renegade has no tuner knob — how do I reboot it?

That is the newer glass Uconnect 5. Hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for about 12–15 seconds instead. The tuner-knob trick only applies to the older rotary-knob units.

Can I do this while driving?

Do it parked. The screen blanks during the reboot, and on a manual you also lose the reversing camera momentarily — not something you want mid-drive.

The screen keeps freezing again after a reboot. Why?

Repeated freezes usually point to a software bug fixed by a Uconnect update, or a weak 12V battery. Check for an update at a dealer or via the Uconnect site, and have the battery tested if the car is a few years old.

Does turning the ignition off and on reset Uconnect?

Not reliably. A short key cycle often resumes the same frozen state because the head unit stays powered for a while. The forced knob/volume reboot is what actually restarts the system.

Diagnosing a warning light alongside the screen glitch? Look up the trouble code first at autodtcs.com to see whether it is electrical-system related before assuming the infotainment is at fault.
