Open and Close the Windows From the Key Fob

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD) 2020-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Volkswagen Golf (Mk8, 2020–Present) can vent the whole cabin from the key fob: hold one button and all four windows drop — plus the panoramic sunroof, if fitted — so the heat is already pouring out before you climb in. Forgot to close a window and it is starting to rain? Hold the other button from across the street and they all wind back up. Volkswagen calls this comfort window opening, and on the Mk8 it is one of the few VAG convenience tricks you can usually switch on yourself from the touchscreen.

What comfort window opening does

A long, continuous press of the remote’s unlock button rolls every window down together; a long press of lock winds them all up. The glass moves only while you hold the button, so you can stop at any height by letting go. On Mk8s with the panoramic roof, the sunroof tilts and then opens during the unlock hold and closes on the lock hold. When everything finishes closing, the indicators flash once to confirm.

How to open all the windows from the fob

  1. Stand within a couple of metres of the Golf so the remote stays in range.
  2. Press and hold the unlock button on the key.
  3. Keep it held — all four windows wind down, and the sunroof opens if fitted.
  4. Release as soon as the windows reach the level you want.

How to close all the windows from the fob

  1. Stand next to the car within remote range.
  2. Press and hold the lock button.
  3. The windows wind up and the sunroof closes while you hold.
  4. Release when everything is shut; the indicators flash once to confirm.

How to enable it on the touchscreen

If holding the button does nothing, check the infotainment first. On the Mk8 the path is Car (or the menu button) → Settings → Open & Close → Comfort opening of windows. Depending on software, you can choose all windows or driver only, and toggle the sunroof. Make sure it is set to all windows and switched on.

If the menu option is missing entirely, the feature is coded off at module level. The Mk8 uses SFD-protected control units, so VCDS cannot do it — OBDeleven (which can request SFD unlock) is the usual tool to activate the radio comfort-opening parameters. This applies to most US-market cars and some base European trims, where the function ships disabled.

The door-lock fallback

If your Golf has a physical key barrel in the driver’s door (Mk8s without Keyless Access usually do, behind a cap on the handle), you can pull the emergency blade from the remote, slot it into the lock and turn and hold toward unlock to lower the windows or toward lock to raise them. Cars with Keyless Access skip the visible barrel, but the remote-button method works the same way once enabled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn’t holding unlock do anything on my Golf Mk8?

Either comfort opening is switched off in the touchscreen (Settings → Open & Close), or it is coded off at module level. Turn it on in the menu first; if there is no menu option, it needs activating with OBDeleven because the Mk8’s SFD security blocks VCDS.

Can I open only the driver’s window or only the fronts?

Yes — unlike older VAG cars, the Mk8 menu lets you pick all windows or just the driver’s window, so you can choose how much opens when you hold unlock.

Does the panoramic sunroof open as well?

If your Mk8 has the panoramic roof and the sunroof option is enabled in the menu, holding unlock tilts and opens it; holding lock closes it with the windows.

It worked, then stopped after a flat battery — why?

A window that has lost its one-touch calibration disables the remote function. Re-initialise each window by holding the switch fully up until it stops, releasing, then holding up again briefly, and repeat for down. The comfort feature should return.

Do I need to be close to the car?

Yes. For safety, use it within about two metres so the remote stays connected and you can watch the glass — releasing the button stops it instantly.

If a window stops responding to both the door switch and the remote, or you get a convenience-system warning, the cause is usually a fault code stored in the body control module. Decode it and see the likely cause at autodtcs.com.
